Nah, the theory is founded solely on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends on that day, so people assume that that's when the world "ends." But the end of a calendar in their culture simply meant the rebirth of an "age," solely in a spiritual sense--it doesn't mean anything bad is going to happen, it's actually quite the contrary.
however it supposedly overlaps with another event, an odd natural occurence where the polarity of the world flips.
magnetic north becomes south, and south becomes north.
last time this happened, it killed the entire telegraphing system across the united states for a week.
basicly, during the time at which it is meant to happen, all electircal tech will get fried if it's on.
so keep EVERYTHING off on that day.
