Gotta tell ya, Vargr had a tough time waiting to submit this. But I felt obligated to give FurFright first shot at it, since this was Author's 2006 submission for their Con-Book.
I definitely felt good about this one, and the comments returned from the Con chair (Belic) and his "editor in chief" (K'Gra) more than echoed this wuff's initial feelings. Thanks to both Belic and K'Gra for such those wonderful reviews and replies!
For the story itself: Set in modern day, in familiar territory for wuffy's author. A hiker (human) encounters deadly weather, and an even more dangerous surprise high in the Colorado Rockies. To say any more would be "telling". *grins*
Enjoy! And be warned, this one packs a rather emotional punch (at least to Vargr it did).

Whoa! That's a quick reply.
Wuffy's VERY glad you enjoyed this, Russano! *hugs*
Yup, the Rockies are beautiful, but they are far from "tame". We get folks every year that find out the hard way just how far from "civilized" the back country can be. And how fast a person can find themselves at the mercy of 'mother nature', when just minutes earlier, before they pulled out of their driveway, she was out of mind and safely at bay behind the snug walls of their home.

Ha! You merely lucked out. Knowing my luck, you won't hear from me for another four months or so.
If the mountain-meanness scale is 1-10, the Appalachians are a 6 and the Rockies are a 9. But I wouldn't want to live much of anywhere else ; I've tried flat places like Kansas, and I was just crushed under the weight of all the sky. I love the way a sun dawns behind a mountain, how it turns a verdant green in summer, then goes for a more gaudy look in fall. Mountains are just more fun to live in.

Thank you, Johnny! Wuffy is so glad you enjoyed this!
Vargr does like to work a twist into his stories where he can. And you know this wuffy - ever the optomist. Love to leave the reader smiling and upbeat.
Speaking of smiling and upbeat - wuff got hit by an idea the other night, about a young feline's discovery of a special fascination with balloons. Now, wonder where the inspiration for that might have come from? *chuckles* Here's hoping Vargr can turn that idea into completed story sometime before the tri-centenial. *grins*

*grins* Drawing? *peers over the tiger's shoulder*
Seriously, there's no need to draw wuffy anything. When the muse hits, it can come from the oddest sources and frequently demands wuffy express the ideas "right now" while they're still hot and fresh. So Vargr is itching to write even without the extra stimulus of your art.
But Vargr isn't one to turn down a kindly offered gift. And this wuff does enjoy your art and your subjects. After all, what's not to like about the combination of a cute tiger and a big, tight, shiny balloon? *BIG grin!*

*chuckles* wuff has no doubt you won't find that word in Websters. "Phat" isn't a bad interpretation.
Also:
Abdominal = in/of the abdomen (belly)
Able = having unusual or superior skill/capabiilty. Especially capable or talented. Having freedom from restriction.
Wuff will let you put those two together, and figure out what Vargr was implying. *grins*

It was tough keeping this one "under cover" until after FurFright was over. But still got to release it just before Halloween, so the timing turned out well (considering the time of events in the story).
Glad you thought it was worth waiting for. And thank you for the kind review. This wuff DOES love to paint 'word pictures' with his stories. Good thing they work as well as they do, 'cause Vargr's regular 'drawing pictures' leave a LOT to be desired! *grins*
Thanks also for the +fav on this. Given all the delightful art, text, and music that hits FA every day, it really touches this wuff when folks think Vargr's work is worth a +Fav distinction. *hugs*

You're very welcome, Nathanounce.
Sometimes these stories just ache to be told, or this wuff's Muse "demands" Vargr get off his fuzzy duff and commit them to text. And, Vargr freely admits, this wuff really enjoys these stories just for their own sake. So wuffy would likely write them just for his own entertainment.
But knowing that Vargr's joy is shared by others - that wuff has entertained, brought a smile or a tear, or perhaps even immersed another friendly fur in a web of characters and events and let them live for a moment in a world of wuffy's making - that really touches this wuff and makes Vargr's joy all the sweeter for the shared experience.
Thank you for your joy, and for the feedback.

Well isn't that something. I always enjoy hearing what comes to a person's mind by one of my pieces. To hear what world or worlds where created in their thoughts, it's like food for my imagination, makes it happy and keeps it going. As you said, it makes things sweeter.
But my muse is still quite small and talks quietly, ideas take time. But slowly I'm learning to listen more carefully to her and as I practise, with each piece I make, she's getting a little bigger each time.

Vargr's very happy to hear you've liked these humble offerings so much. It's a pleasure to write them, but even more so to know others are enjoying the stories as well. Wuff feels as warm and fuzzy on the inside as he looks on the outside when he thinks of bringing a moment of delight and entertainment to others out there.
And wuff is very sorry it took SOOOO long to reply to your nice message!
