The dreamcatcher, so well known today, began as a custom of the Ojibwa peoples of central North America. They were created by parents of newborns as protective wards and placed above those children’s sleeping places.
The web of a dreamcatcher, with its bead “spider”, existed to catch bad dreams before they reached the child it protected, while the hole in the middle would let good dreams through. About the time the child was grown to adolescence, ready for adulthood, the natural materials of the dreamcatcher would be old and decaying—but it had done its job, and would be ready for discarding.

Good description of the "proper" use of a dreamcatcher. Unlike all those ones I saw hanging from automobile rear view mirrors in the 80's and 90's. For the thing to work you'd have to all sleep behind the wheel! Oh that makes me feel more comfortable when I'm on the freeway!
Heck, it’s not like there aren’t enough articles on the Web talking about the dreamcatcher’s history and role! If people just bothered with what I consider a minimal amount of research—and actual cultural respect, as opposed to Crunchy New-Age Goodness™—there would be far less tooth-gritting in this world. A running joke in our crowd is “So you’ve hung a dreamcatcher on your rear-view mirror; does that mean you’re prone to falling asleep at the wheel?”
As a friend of mine has commented, these are the same people who can’t credit white people with anything “ethnicky” except the ancient Celts.
