The thing is, we had a fair amount of character development on past Coop, thanks to the “Summer’s Gone” series, but there hasn’t been much on present Coop. My guess is that there’s going to be a lot more development there that allows him coming to terms with stuff.
Speaking from personal experience, a person’s closeted feelings (whether sexuality related or otherwise) can cause that unstableness and coming to terms with those feelings can help mellow it out. Of course, I’m not Cooper; I’m sure whatever Jackaloo has planned will end up benefiting all his characters.

Ahh, all my talk of closeted feelings and I forgot about Chelsea. I could totally see that! Maybe he opens up to her about whatever homosexual feelings he has (after a lot of that morbidity) and she helps him come to terms, in one way or another. Definitely looking forward to the next pages.
That... Or... Maybe Cooper, in his most darkest moments of depression, happens to find something that belonged to his dad, like a firearm? And Chelsea catching him about to discharge it in his own face, but wrestling him to the ground and accidentally hitting Andy... Or something completely in another direction? But what ever it is, I can smell a very dark and morbid thing just over the horizon lol.
As much as I understand your sentiments. Everyone deserves a chance to turn over a new leaf. Yes Andy has certainly given Coop many chances, but late bloomers have a tough time coming out of the closet. He's got a lot of preconceived notions of homosexuality that don't mesh with how he sees himself and the conflicting feelings have turned to rage.
It is always easy to condemn. The harder course is to forgive. You know Andy will probably forgive him
