I always liked or was fascinated by the idea of doing things like this. I mean how the character has dark outlines, while the background lacks any. I could never pull it off

Yes! the outcome is very pretty, it's actually not THAT complicated, it's a matter of knowing about values and picking the right colors so the background looks natural enough
It's kind of similar to painting actually
