As the partygoers laughed and reveled in the yard below, they were unaware that a few of their lights were missing, or rather, appropriated, by the insects that gathered on the awning to celebrate themselves.
Above the people, the myriad of tiny species cavorted to the music drifting up from below, enjoying the cool night and bright lights and the company of others of their kind. In this instance, the dragonfly Cordi pairs off with a female worker from a nearby colony for a few dances.
Whew. This one took me a while to do. A practice picture to get back into the groove of things, and also a golden opportunity to try out new techniques and programs.
First, I scanned the linework at triple the size I normally do, and double the resolution. Then I took a few hours to rework the lines and smooth them out before coloring.
For coloring, I downloaded SAI and played around with that, mostly focusing on the ink and water color tools for this first try at it, before finishing up in Photoshop.
Feels nice to draw again. Only real complaint is the purple "clothing" on the lady ant looks a little to much like the blue highlights on her carapace. Ah well, note for next time.

Well when dealing with anything anthropomorphic the basics are pretty much the same. You could have done lots of cheaty embellishments on the bodies but I think you balanced it well to make them look like insects but also believable in the shape of their muscles and such. :)
Heh. I kinda figured the workers wouldn't be sexual at all, and it's just two insects enjoying a dance together. :P
I kinda picture her finding that scrap of silk cloth while hunting for food one day, and saving it for special occasions like this, much to the envy of her hive-mates! ;)

Well...last times I started to use Google SketchUp for doing 3D models, and then make them up in GIMP :). Anyway I prefer to use one program, because then I don't have to copy color sets, brushes, and other things. Also there is no so many portable graphics formats that supports layers :(.
I think your scanning it at three times the size and twice the resolution really paid off on this one. And if you hadn't said anything about the ant's clothing, I would have figured that you did that on purpose to keep her as a cool in contrast to the relative warmth of the dragonfly.
wow very well done Sky. Not much of a fan of insects but I like this. I love the shading you did on their bodies and their anatomy is very well drawn as well. Keep it up <(^.=.^)>.. and this is difficult.. trying to sift through your 200+ submissions.. cause quit frankly I love them all XD.
