Many people remember the big After the Siren goals in the AFL that have a huge impact on a season.
From Malcolm Blight's famous Booming Torpedo Punt Goal in 1976 that is still getting runs in Highlight Packages to this day to Luke Shuey putting West Coast into a Semi-Final after a gruelling match against Port Adelaide that went into Extra Time just last season, The After the Siren Goal is an unique feature to Aussie Rules Football that I love about the game and in the FAFL, We've had a few but the one that sticks out to me is the one that made Rudy Walker a household name.
September 12th, 2015.
Orange, New South Wales.
Despite winning the Minor Premiership and earning the right to host the 2015 Qualifying Final, The Orange Miners were coming in underdogs against the reigning and defending Premiers in the Adelaide Butcherbirds who had beaten the Red Hot Miners twice earlier in the Home and Away Season and at Half Time, It was looking like it was about to go to script as the Adelaide Butcherbirds were leading the Miners at the End of the Half by 41 Points with Walker, Steve Lambert, Keith Gordon, Cecil Brooks, Rupert Meerrat and Peter Saggent each kicking 1 goal in the First Half.
Things looked grim for the Orange Miners as it looked like they would need to come back the next week and play the Gold Coast in the Next Week's Preliminary Final for a Spot in the Grand Final while the Butcherbirds would have the next week off and prepare for that One Day in September. However, the Miners would have other plans. Rudy would kick start the Miners out of the gates kicking the first two goals of the Half to get the Miners back on track. Lambert would kick 2 while Brooks would kick 1 to claw back the margin to 23 points at 3 Quarter Time.
Then Walker kicked into Overdrive, He would kick 2 goals in the 4th Quarter to claw the Miners back to 11 points thanks to a Rock-Hard Defence stopping the Butcherbirds in their tracks. Veteran Keith Gordon would get another goal to get it down to 5 points. 1:30 to go, The ball is hitout of the Centre Square. Both teams struggle to get it out of the midfield. 1:00 to go, Adelaide get it out of the centre square but struggle to get it to a Forward, 0:30 to go, Butcherbirds up by 5. The Miners start a charge to their Forward Line, They get it back to the Midfield, 0:15 to go the Miners are fighting with the Butcherbirds to get the ball to their end.
0:07 to go, Ball kicked into Forward 50... Last Roll of the Dice for the Miners....
WALKER!!!! You Little Beauty!!!
Rudy makes the big pack hanger with the Siren Sounding only a few seconds after the mark and is about 40m out from the goals.
It's the biggest pressure that the Young Red Panda had ever had in his career at that point, Huge Pressure on him to make the kick.
To put them into a Grand Final...
He Kicks...........
HE'S DONE IT!!!! THE MINERS INTO THEIR FIRST GRAND FINAL SINCE 1999!!!!!
Miners win by 1 Point with the scores, Orange 15.12 (102) defeating Adelaide 15.11 (101) in the game that would kickstart the Miners Dynasty.
Since that game, Rudy has become the pound for pound best player in the game. He's not only won 2 C.J. Willing Trophies for being the Fairest and Best in the FAFL but has been a 3-time Premiership Player with the Miners and a 2-time Geoff Rose Medallist for being the Best on Ground during the Grand Final.
He has become the Big Star player in the FAFL. He is no-longer that young Red Panda that Orange selected Pick #8 in the 2014 FAFL Draft but he is now the face of the franchise. He is lucky to have had Great Success with the Miners straight of the bat thanks to his phenomenal talent and the great team around him.
However, While 2018 will be the hardest season yet for Rudy due to quite a number of his teammates from the Last 3 Seasons moving on either to new teams or retirement, One Thing opposing team will still need to do is...
Stop Rudy Walker!
And that my friends is a hard job.
I'm now commissioning Artists to do my characters in the FAFL and UFFL, so from here on out, You guys will want to keep track of this account of mine as I will be uploading Commissions along with a backstory on a defining moment in their career so far and how the upcoming/current season is looking/going for them.
First off is One of my Main Characters in the FAFL and One of my Favorites, Rudy Walker.
I've been wanting to get a Commission for Him for a long time!
I have two more coming up in the near future and quite a few more down the pipeline.
(Also, Sorry for not updating my Journal. I'm more active in the FAFL at the moment.)
