I imagine it's basically treated as hair for a lion really with the exception of the full buzzcut sorta thing. In my head, a lion's mane is indeed an inherent symbol of masculinity/attributed to power. So keeping some of it is necessary for lions but buzzing it all the way down would only really be seen on women/effeminate men.
