I'm getting the hang of coloring with my wrist bandaged up! :D Decided to finish this piece this morning. How old does Tommy look here? I was going for around 7-ish.
Young Tommy looks a little odd here, but I'm still getting used to drawing children. Anyways, little Tommy got in trouble, and in my story, his dad was kind of a jerk. For a "time out," (which Tommy was very lucky to receive, better than the belt) he'd tie up Tommy in the backyard and leave him there for awhile. He'd even sometimes forget to untie his son and remember again the next morning. I actually forgot to draw a dog collar on him, which from what I have perceived in the world of Meitantei Holmes, is rather degrading. Either way, Tommy is tired of being tied up and he is really sorry for what he did. So, why would someone take a photograph of Tommy when he is in trouble and upset? LOL Maybe his dad did it. :) What a BIG jerk.
What did he do? I dunno. I guess he snuck out of the house to hang out with Marie when his father strictly forbade it. I wanted to show what Tommy had to endure as a child, since it is important to my story. Not a bad childhood, but not great with such a jerk of a dad. But hey, his dad is doing what he thinks is right so he can teach his son things correctly. Beh.
God... those eyes.

Yeah, Tommy's dad HATES Marie. He thinks she's a little slut (she's freakin' 8... ). Marie's mom doesn't like Tommy either, though. She thinks he's only after one thing. XD He's 8... Stupid adults. Honestly, Marie's mom, Antoinette, just doesn't like Tommy because she doesn't like Tommy's dad, so she takes it out on him. Beh.
Yayy! :D Old photos are fun to make!

To me he has the stunned/numb kind of sadness. Like when something hurts so bad you just kinda go empty. You could have the eyelids a bit more angled to make that sad face look but that sorta stuff people actually gotta study. The face does some really interesting stuff to make expressions. There are SO many muscles at work! I think you did a good job and the feeling comes off right. =)
I need to show next that, all in all, he's still a pretty happy kid. He has some sadness, of course, but how to properly treat children was just then being talked about in that period of time. Hell, some parents would send their 8 year old's to work hard days in workhouses and not give a crap if the kid was okay or not. The kid was just a little adult and striking a child wasn't a big deal. :/ Thanks to Queen Victoria for going "Okay... yeah... no. Enough. I'm raising the level of the age of children where they have to stay in school until 12," and she made it easier for kids to go to school.
Now the wealthier kids (middle and upper-class), such as Tommy, they had it pretty good, but the parents could still be super strict. Tommy's dad, at least for that day in age, wasn't a bad guy at all (even though everyone else even agreed that he was *too* strict on his kids). He worked his butt off every single day, whether he wanted to or not, so he could make sure his family ate *very* well, had a nice home, good status in society and that his kids got a full education until the age of 15 with the option of attending the University afterwards. His dad just needs to find a better way to discipline Tommy and stop tying him up in the backyard, which honestly is the most gentle approach he can take. His father his no problem actually whacking one of his kids.
All in all, Tommy was one lucky kid. :D

I see, sounds like the well meaning father who just wants to make sure his son is "tough" and "smart" so he can succeed in life, so he decided to use the good ol' time tested "tough love". Ahh parents. Gotta love 'em. They put us through hell and back, all in the name of love and providing for our future. XD
