(Sorry for the grainy-ness, but I didn't have a digital camera back in the early 90's when these photos were taken and scanned, and sadly, I can't find the originals in order to rescan them.) Anyways, I don't carve pumpkins...I paint them with oil-based paint pens; they last much longer that way. I painted tons of them (each one differently) for the non-profit "Circle of Friends" organization--of which I was a member back in TX before moving to Norway--that volunteered to paint and sell pumpkins each Fall, and then donated all the proceeds to the Cook's Childrens Hospital, which runs a charity to help children with cancer. :)

For something like a realistic turkey or a Fall landscape, I'd use a photo ref, but most of my pumpkins were fantasy and Halloween themes, so they didn't have to be that realistic. I just drew on the pumpkin's surface with an erasable ball-point pen, painted over large areas with acryllics, and did all the rest plus the outlines with paint pens. Any left-over visible pen marks could easily be erased. I just wish I had a pic of the turkey one I did; that one was HUGE and had every feather detailed...it sold for $500, all of which went to the charity, of course! :)
I'm amazed luv at how well you paint on some unusual surfaces!!! our husbands rump in particular!! lol
This is gorgeous!!! Will you be painting pumpkins this year? And it's lovely that the money made from this was given to charity!! makes the artwork that much more special!
