Trinity Site today
On my way home, my GPS sent me on a different route than I normally take. This time I went east of Socorro New Mexico along Route 380. Literally in the middle of nowhere and hardly any traffic.
But what got me was I past by a historical site, on July 16th, 1945, the worlds first Nuclear explosion happened here, where Robert Oppenheimer infamously said "Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds".
Its not really marked except with a sign, and since it was too close to closing time, I actually couldn't get literally at ground zero.
The Bomb went off 4 miles from this point here. locals who lived in ranches in the area were told a ammo dump blew up to hide the fact it was a single bomb.
Days later, Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be obliterated and WW2 would come to an end.
And say what you want about those horrid weapons, despite killing almost 200,000 people in those cities, Those bombs likely SAVED Millions of lives. Had Operation Olympic taken part on November of 45 as part of the planned three part invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. SEVEN planned nukes would have been used just a couple days ahead of the invasion.
Just US estimated casualties alone would have been 1.5 MILLION, not counting the Japanese losses at 6-7 MILLION INITIALLY! Judging by how fanatical the defenders of Okinawa were, losses would have been much higher.
To this day, the US armed forces is handing out Purple Heart decorations for its wounded servicemen that were made for just Olympic.

Kind of creepy, to be in the area under the bomb's explosion.
Also, to answer
ozfoxaroo, the radiation from the bomb dissipated long ago. Just don't touch the Trinitite, that shit's still packing with rads and taking them is illegal.

As it turns out, Tritinite is harmless to touch and keep. Just wash your hands, and don't let it into your mouth or open wounds.

I had coffee with my uncle and chatted with him many times. I think he gave me the great honor that he talked about the War with me. He was a Marine. He'd spent some exciting months on a tropical paradise called Guadalcanal, then went home as an instructor. He'd been rotated back to a combat assignment and was going to be in the first wave of Operation Olympic.
Interestingly enough, I also had coffee with a formerly Japanese lady, mother of a friend of mine. At the end of WWII she'd been trained to go down to the beach and fight the invading Marines. She was about 14 at the time. The weapon she'd been issued was just a pointed stick.
