Maybe I'm a Lion? - Tribute to Zack Fair
If you know nothing about Final Fantasy VII, this drawing won't make a lot of sense. It looks like a random lion anthro with a turtleneck sweater and a big ass sword surrounded by text. But, for those of you who have partaken of the VII experience, particularly the first game + Advent Children + Crisis Core, maybe you'll understand. :)
I've been playing FFVIICC a lot lately and have come to greatly enjoy the main character. Zach Fair is teh best evar, and that's not something I say for just any character. In ways I like him better than Cloud! *GASP* Sacrilege, you say? Well, tough. Zack deserves his props for all the crappy hand life deals him.
So, I was checking out the new hairstyle he gets partway through the game and I thought, "Gee. Kinda looks like a lion's mane." Which made me think of the way Cloud's wolf decorations in Advent Children look... well... more leonine than canine, in my opinion. And then I thought of the song from FF8 when you fight Griever, the purple lion-esque Guardian Force and inspiration for Squall's ring/necklace/gunblade tassel. That song's title happens to be the first part of this submission's title. For obvious reasons, I think...
Anyway, the decision was made not long after. Gotta draw Zack Fair. Gotta make him a lion. Had in mind a view of him in part shadow looking all depressed. Searched for images, and boom. Right away found just what I was looking for.
So, from a 3DCGI of the ill-fated SOLDIER 1st Class comes my 2D sketch tribute to the one and only Zack!
A lot of the text is quotes from Crisis Core Photoshopped in because I thought it would be cool. All except for those in the bottom left and top right corners. Those I stenciled in. Kinda undecided on whether I like the lettering or not.
I'm not sure how well I like the shading on his face. I wanted it to be dark, but I tried it darker and then couldn't tell just from the facial lines that he was supposed to be a lion, so I lightened it. Chose to leave the eye pure white rather than blacked out as in the original to add to the leonine characteristic, and because that it adds hollowness to his look.
The perspective on the sword is a little whack. It looks like it's angled too far toward the viewer on the right side, but I don't know how it ended up that way. I always have that trouble with perspective...
Anyway, what do y'all think? Is it a worthy tribute to the most under-appreciated SOLDIER 1st Class ever?

I think my talent lies more in borrowing other people's talent to a great degree. I see something awesome and think, "Wow... I wish I could do that!" So in my own way I do it, but it's not the same as setting out on your own and being the person that makes someone like me say and do such a thing. Someday when I'm able to make what's in my mind real and become the person that makes others say "Wow... I wish I could do that!" ... That's the day when I'll feel like I've earned such praise. Thank you for your generous comments, though. It makes a 1/2 bear feel good to have somebody say things like that about their meager successes.
All this weekend, I was thinking about that sword. I laughed because i thought to myself, If i tried to draw that sword,it would look like it fell down the side of a mountain! I can draw a strait line to save my life! Just think of your charactor and draw him more often. I'm surprise i can can draw mine almost the same.
I was thinking about Vincent the other day and what animal he'd be too. He does have that lone wolf persona, but personally I think the "Gaelian Beast" from his first limit break is more fitting. Dunno what the hell a Gaelian Beast is supposed to be. I guess it's like a mini-behemoth? Are they feline or canine? *Shrug* Either way, it fits him. If I'm brave maybe I'll give it a shot. :P
