Bio: James Brennan grew up in a typical middle class home in Southern California. Though he always got great grades in school, even in his elementary school days, James was fascinated with ancient Norse history, myths and legends. He became SO infatuated with all things Norse that he majored in Ancient History at Union University, even writing his Master’s Thesis on “The Legend of Hammercles.” After obtaining his Doctorate, James was asked to stay on and join the Union faculty. Professor Brennan was a very popular teacher on campus. Many students enjoyed his energetic lectures and the passion he displayed for all he taught. His popularity soon made one particular member of the Union faculty jealous: Professor Igor Badtoni. Igor also served in the History Department and grew extremely jealous of the younger elk buck. In 2015, Igor hatched a plan to frame and discredit James, a plan that worked to perfection. Claiming innocence even after months of internal investigations, Union University chose to dismiss Professor Brennan with cause, taking away all his tenure and pension benefits. Unable to find a permanent new career, James began calling himself by his middle name, Blake, and performed various odd and short term menial jobs around Colmaton to make enough money to survive.

He was soon forced to sell his luxurious home and moved into a small apartment on the north end of Colmaton. There, he tried to remain low key, though he was befriended by another tenant of the building, Colmaton Police Officer Wilma Harrington. The ewe and the buck became fast friends, although James had a secret crush on her. As the years went by, James found less and less odd jobs, teetering on the verge of eviction. It was at this time, in late 2017, that Colmaton Pit Bull Terrier mob boss Big Al Greco plotted to kidnap him to discover the secret of the Hammercles, a Norwegian ancient relic that Big Al’s associates managed to steal from him. Big Al’s idea was to unlock the ancient secret of the Hammercles so that he could become the mighty Norse hero and use his new superpowers to defeat all of the superfurs of Colmaton. After kidnapped four other experts in Norse history and getting no answers from them, Big Al sent his henchfurs after James, who was caught even after the heroic efforts by Officer Harrington to save him. After Big Al explained his ‘brilliant’ plan to Professor Brennan, the elk informed him that according to ancient legends, the Hammercles itself chose the one who would wield it. Frustrated, when Big Al gave the Hammercles to James to hold for him, the ancient relic glowed and caused the elk to glow as well. The spirit residing in the Hammercles had chosen the Professor to possess its awesome powers! When that spirit called out for the ‘Matriarch’ of the clan to recite the Ode of Hammercles, Officer Harrington did, transforming James into a larger, mightier form. Heroic Hammercles had been reborn!

When Big Al commanded him to do his will, Hammercles informed the Pit Bull Terrier crime boss that he only served the side of justice and then attacked him. Seeing their boss easily defeated, the rest of Big Al’s gang tried to pounce on the hulking elk, but they too, met easy defeat. The spirit of the Hammercles soon integrated into its new ‘host’ body. Hammercles even confessed James’ love for Officer Harrington. Soon, Super Genie arrived to help Hammercles and James comprehend their new partnership. One of the other captive experts turned out to be Josephine Marie Dupree, a Belgian quarterhorse mare who transformed into her superheroine form, Noble Knight, Director of the Bureau’s European Region. When Super Genie offered James the choice of remaining unregistered or serving in the Bureau of Superheroes, he chose the Bureau. After the legal team of Ben Maddog and Abby Maddog-Davenport finished proving Professor Brennan’s innocence in court (and thus, Union University cleared him of all wrongdoing and restored his job, rank and benefits), James arranged a sabbatical from the school so he could fly to Europe to secretly receive B.O.S. training in Norway. Both Officer Harrington (now promoted to the rank of Captain and named official CPD liaison to all the superfurs in Colmaton) and Rupee Punjab-Maddog (aka Super Genie) saw him off at the airport, knowing that he would return to Colmaton someday soon.

Personality: James is normally a rather timid, unassuming sort of furson who did his best to not make trouble. However, after receiving the Hammercles spirit, he is more confident, bold and sure of himself than he was before. When transformed into Hammercles, the spirit of the hammer often seeks to do things the ‘old fashioned way’, as in, the ancient Viking way. Often the mind of James intervenes to keep him in check, obeying the modern rules of crime fighting and peacekeeping. It will take time for ‘Hammercles’ to fully understand the present day world, but with James as his guide, he is learning more every day.
