have you ever thought about backing up your work to hard disk and then re-installing your operating system? it sounds like you os is on it's last legs. i'm worried that you system might crash soon and loose all of your hard work!
please consider trying a re-install. i know it's time consuming, but it could make things a lot easier on you.

I think the computer has undergone... hmmm... i think at least five re-installments.
And don't worry, I do back-up my files

then it might be the ram. it's the only other thing i can think of that would affect a bare desktop without a hidden background virus hitting you.
try pulling all your ram but one stick and testing each of them individually to see if one won't work for you. that's all i can suggest with the info at hand.

the end if it's life can always be up to you hun. if you fix and upgrade as you go, then you never need to buy a new one. that's how i got mine working in the first place. a little ram here, a motherboard and processor there. that kind of thing.
my biggest help was not trying to buy it all at once. i'm currently running a 2.0 dual core, 1660 gigs on 5 drives, the most expensive thing was the terabite drive at 100usd.
think about it at least. you can have a bad ass compie if you do it slow.
