Chronologically, this image takes place before he finds his board on the beach. What he's trying to do here is make his own surf boards out of the logs in his pen at CFAR. As you can see in the background, he's had limited success... But he won't give up!
This was another image done while brainstorming on how he got into surfing and got his first board. Making a surfboard is harder than it looks, and Kitty really wanted to try his paws at it. Although it didn't make him a board in the end, it still probably made him more personally intimate with the sport.
It was also fun experimenting with screwy board shapes in the background ;)
