Goodbye Toys "R" Us my old friend... I'll miss you.
Well as most people know. Toys "R" Us a toy store that has been around since 1948 Announced a few days ago that is closing all of its stores in the US. It's a sad day for long term Fans of the stores such as myself. So a few days ago I went to Reno to say good bye to an old friend. I wish I could have gone to the one in San Jose but sadly I'll never get that chance. I went to Toys "R" Us in Reno and it felt great walking in and I saw a lot of people there. If only there was that many people on a day-to-day basis. I thought to make the last day of Toys "R" Us a good one I'd buy something from my childhood. There are lots of things I could buy but in the end I initially went with the toy that I remember growing up with. A Tonka dump truck. I grew up with Tonka as well as Toys "R" Us and I even have my old front in loader and bulldozer from my early days as a child in the early nineties and they're still going strong. Just shows you how well Tonka it makes its toys. After that I got in line for the Register and bought it and at the same time I felt myself crying a little. Toys r us was one of my favorite places to go and look for toys.
Sad thing is when I looked at a few the toys I said to my self "Maybe I can buy those online" so in cents i can see why a lot of stores like this closes. Where in an age where we can use technology in get stuff online. Everyone mainly gets there stuff off Amazon me personally I prefer eBay. But speaking of which I have an idea that I hope could happen. What if after Toys "R" Us closes their stores maybe we'll go as an online site like eBay Amazon or any other place that you can buy stuff. Don't know if the higher ups will go with that but hey I'm 24 year old man who loves trains what do I even know about stores?
But either way if those few days were the last days of Toys "R" Us and the dump truck I bought will be the last thing I ever buy from them. Well then that is that. Least I made that day a great day and made one more memory to Treasure.
Goodbye Toys "R" Us my old friend... I'll miss you. We had a lot of great times.
You hold so many Memories....

Could possibly happen later on. I've heard that the owners of the now defunct KB toys brand are wanting to try to re-open a few small stores. Toys R Us is a big name and I would think someone would try to do something with it too. Whether that's a few months or many years down the road (or even at all) I don't know, but I would think there's a good chance of it.
I almost got a job there back in 2006. Applied for an assembler position of bikes and such, and sat through an odd group interview for a mass hiring during the Christmas season. Didn't want to work straight up retail though and turned it down. I wonder how my life would have been different otherwise.
I went in for one last trip with my brother last Thursday. I was surprised at how many people were there on a week night even though there were no discounts or official notices of the store closing posted. I guess a lot of people feel the same way, just wanting to stop by once more before they close up. I bought one of those little "Pop" figurines of Sprocket from Fraggle Rock, and a mini Magic 8 Ball. Was going to originally just buy online from their site, but I figured that would ruin the ceremony of it. It's easier to buy stuff online, but I think there's still value about going to a store to purchase goods. I think a lot of the fond memories I have associated with going to Toys R Us or other shopping trips as a child involve spending time with loved ones too. Walking up and down the aisles and socializing with people at the same time. The technology we have is great, but still I think it's isolating us too.
Gotta find someone to commission for a picture of the old style Geoffrey now. I'll get drunk and cry about it some more ;)
