The first half reminds me of a scene from Stephen Lawhead's "Song of Albion" series.
After defeating an opponent at a warrior school the main character is surprised when he finds him at dinner and tosses a gold torc at him. (Some sort of neck adornment) He had an arrangement with his father. He was to give the torc to the first man to beat him. He was also never to come home without it. The main character offers it back, offending the first guy until he explains.
"I want to give you a gift of equal value, and this is the only thing I have."
By doing so the opponent met his father's conditions, kept his honour, and was able to stay in line to the family holdings.
The guys in the story did not kiss, so the second half of this page doesn't fit.
Still, it was a good series. Well written to the point that putting the book down at the end of my lunch break felt like waking from a dream. Should you be interested.
