DELAY: the nth amount of time past the moment of execution.
Geoffrey vividly remembered the passage in his Fox’s Collegiate Dictionary and gritted his teeth. ‘Moment of execution’ glared at him in neon red like a malevolent poltergeist points to take recriminations for something he didn’t do… but that was the point, wasn’t it? ‘Didn’t do’, ‘Past the moment’, ‘Not on time’, ‘Shoulda coulda woulda’…
“NOW!” he yelled. “HARD A LEE! PORT BATTERY FIRE!”
Bright lights came on in the room accompanied by a thunderous applause.
His opponent glared at him. “A simple check mate would have sufficed,” he grumbled.

It's funny how a lot of really good chess players do have strange personality quirks. I think I can forgive his opponent for being grumpy about such a show-boaty display. :D

Thanks for this, the "delay" and "moment of execution" reminded me of a story i once drafted and never wrote. So i've compressed it into this:
