It's actually a sci-fi sorta thing, so there's a lot more to it than it appears. IC'ly I would say it's probably got room for a bit of water and food for longer trips, a pouch or two for sample collection, and the metal bits are actually s'posed to be spots for optional "arm" upgrades, allowing for grasping and moving and living things.
There would also be other versions of similar gear, like a heftier scientific research one maybe, maybe another for extended exploratory trips, and definitely at least one armoured one designed for combat situations.
