Hello, Tibo here!
Flinters introduced me to fanzine publishing. Left to myself, it never would have occurred to me that one could publish a book simply by running some art through a photocopier and stapling it together -- and then sell it to people. That's just crazy talk! Nevertheless, he was doing it, as part of Unigraphix, and not long after meeting him I was involved in printing/reprinting some issues of Hot To Trot, an early hoofer-themed zine.
Then I saw an ad for a used photocopier. Whoa -- imagine what we could do if we could print in-house instead of having to go down to Kinko's or Office Depot! And didn't have to worry about what the staff there thought! We were renting a house at the time, so we actually had room and electrical capacity for the thing, and the price was right...
This may not be the absolute FIRST thing to bear the Jarlidium logo. It's hard to tell. Nobody starts out something new by saying "I should carefully archive everything I do." It's the oldest Jarlidium publication I have found so far, anyway.
So what was DBU? The Dallas Brawl Update was an offshoot of Bizarre Wars, originally known as Barr Wars. Barr Wars was a group formed by Donna Barr, once well-known in furry circles for her comics about the centaur Stinz, which traded zaps -- good-natured pokes at each other -- via comics and art. Later it became Bizarre Wars after Donna handed it over to others to run. Anyway, it was so popular that more people wanted in than could be accommodated, so there was a waiting list, and the waiting list organized their own publication, DBU.
When Mel. White had to give up running DBU, Flinters was a member, and we had a copier in-house... I honestly can't remember anymore if we came up with the Jarlidium imprint because we were going to have a recurring title or if it already existed, but putting out DBU every month certainly cemented it as the name that we worked under.
Cover art for the November 1998 DBU by Zephery Hughes, who is still around and active in another Jarlidium publication, North American Fur. I don't think he has a FA page, though.
