start out light, with stuff you know you can do like 10-12 reps with! then slowly increase your weight as you get stronger - big jumps can lead to injury.
you can build up more strength with the 3 main lifts (squat, bench, deadlift) by doing a lot of accessory work too.

i haven't started competing yet, but i heard it's better if you don't tell yourself that you have to wait until you have "competitive" totals
it's a solo sport, and you're basically competing against yourself and striving to be stronger than you were before. everyone else around you at a meet will be cheering you on so that you can beat your previous PRs! there are also plenty of I's in powerlifting ;)
