Well.
Things had taken a turn rather quickly, hadn't they? One minute everyone was enjoying a good story, the next they were getting ready to fight for their lives. PALADIN had been interrupted by RANGER who had heard something rustling in the darkness, this time sure HE/SHE/THEY hadn't mistaken the movement of a dark shape just beyond the reach of the fire's light. The whole party had gone still and silent, the only noise the crackling of the fire.
"Show yourself," RANGER called, getting up from HIS/HER/THEIR crouched position, one hand reaching for HIS/HER/THEIR/ bow, the other going for an arrow. It would be hard to fight in close quarters with a bow but it was what HE/SHE/THEY felt most comfortable with. If push came to shove the dagger hidden in HIS/HER/THEIR boot would do just fine.
"There's nothing there," MONK said with a huff, the first to lower HIS/HER/THEIR guard. "Just your imagination. PALADIN's stories have your imagination running away with-"
But MONK was cut off by another, louder rustling. This one was accompanied with a low, dangerous growl. It was hard to place where it was coming from and the party looked around as they all began to reach for their weapons and shields of choice. Getting to HIS/HER/THEIR feet, PALADIN bared HIS/HER/THEIR teeth to the darkness.
"Come out and fight!" HE/SHE/THEY snarled. "No use hiding in the shadows now, we know you're there!"
Another low sound came from the underbrush but this one sounded like a laugh. A terrifying one, certainly, but a laugh all the same. The noise was repeated by more unseen creatures in the darkness and it was with a sense of dread the party realized they were completely surrounded. Finally on HIS/HER/THEIR feet, PALADIN hefted HIS/HER/THEIR shield onto HIS/HER/THEIR arm, RANGER nocked the arrow and drew back on HIS/HER/THEIR bow, and MONK adopted a stance that would allow HIM/HER/THEM to attack or dodge, depending on what the situation called for. The rest of their party had their backs to them, facing the other unseen creatures in the darkness.
Things were tense and silent for a few moments before RANGER finally lost HIS/HER/THEIR patience and let the arrow fly into the darkness. Out of sheer luck it struck something that yowled in pain. RANGER barely had time to draw a second arrow before the bushes erupted with massive, terrifying creatures, all teeth and claws and muscles. They bellowed and snarled at the party, drool dripping from their maws as the two groups faced off.
"BRING IT ON!" PALADIN yelled, spreading HIS/HER/THEIR arms wide in a taunt. MONK fought not to roll HIS/HER/THEIR eyes as HE/SHE/THEY bent HIS/HER/THEIR knees, ready to spring into action. RANGER nocked another arrow and aimed it at the beast in the center of the group, bow string taunt. The beasts let another chorus of snarls and bellows loose before charging the party, their battle cry echoed by PALADIN, RANGER, and MONK.
The battle had begun.
