An unconscious shapeshifter will automatically revert to the form most comfortable to them if they're sufficiently exhausted. Drunk, tired, and generally desiring nothing more than some shut-eye after a night of intense drinking and energetic socialising, this serpent shifter flopped onto his couch with no consideration for the human-sized clothes he was currently wearing, nor the similarly crashed-out casual hookup he left upstairs in his bed.
It's going to be an awkward morning for both of them. The hookup, at least, will get a good laugh from the panicked, intensely self-conscious, flailing their presence will induce.

I certainly like the lighting and subtle reflective quality of the scales; it really helps the character to "pop" out of the picture. The composition feels a bit empty, though, particularly the top-right area. That may simply be the artist's preference, so I suppose it's not that major an issue.

I imagine it would depend on the shifter in question and how they personally felt about their alternate form. I don't really have a hugely developed backstory for this guy, I'm afraid, at least not regarding the what and the why of his shapeshifting powers, so I can't particularly say one way or the other.
For the most part, I'd consider unconscious expressions of their non-human side to be an outward reflection of their current mood and mental state. So if anything, shifting into snake form during a nice dream would result in this guy feeling even more rested come the morning!

dawww * places a mug with fresh hot coffe next to the snake guys poking out tounge so he can tasty it and slowly wakes up as i offers him some tasty cookies too before leading him to his comfy bed and then turns on the heating lmp above said bed for him* ^^ snake people are precious and need to be taken good care off ...well at least cute ones like this guy ;3
