Couch Kitties: Crypto What, Now?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti.....n-union-square
CryptoKitties, the blockchain-based virtual game that was a breakout success on the Ethereum network, is being spun off as a separate venture that has already raised $12 million from a star-studded roster of investors.
While Andreessen Horowitz and Union Square Ventures led the funding round, other investors included Coinbase Inc. founder Fred Ehrsam, AngelList Chief Executive Naval Ravikant and Zynga founder Mark Pincus, the venture-studio Axiom Zen said in a statement.
Tali, Zeph and the kittehs are more than a little dubious...

*warning wild guess ahead*
So...players PAY for a blockchain 'game' (either directly, microtransactions, and/or ad revenue/data sale)..and their phone resources gets used for blockchain generation/distribution..while the original company profits instead of the phone users.....let me know how far off base I am.
This smells suspiciously like the web/browser 'app' that secretly uses visitor PC resources to mine cryptocurrency while they are on the website....not tasty squab at all

ok so I just went to the site....
This is a very thinly veiled way to try and bring cryptocurrencies mainstream...and likely to succeed to a decent degree. Given the *cough*marketing*cough* err news coverage.
It requires you to setup a proprietary digital wallet and invest in a proprietary cryptocurrency to play the game.
The setup required also points towards (but does not confirm) some of my guesses. PC/MAC desktop/laptop required, one of two web browsers required. No mobile support. No proprietary client/app like most games. I would put a fair wager that the site will use cycles in player GPUs for their own ends (mining/blockchain generation) as they have to be signed in to the digital wallet to play. Also my GPU usage spiked when on their webpage that only had a few simple static images on it, make of that what you will.
Sure the kitties are cuteish, but...there are far more cute imaginary kitties all over online, and lots of real ones that need loving homes. If I am going to toss my money at something it will be artists for the imaginary kitties they bring us and/or pet rescue groups.
I may have to commission parody art based on various other kitties/furs.
TL:DR They make people pay for the privilege of having their PC resources used unknowingly, and cushioning/inflating the erratic cryptocurrency market so those heavily invested in it and reliant on its success do not have to.
No tasty squab here just a steaming heap $6.7 mil and growing that would make PT Barnum proud.
