Poison - более собирательное слово для потенциально ядовитых неопознанных субстанций.
лягуха с ядом, выделяющимся через кожу может быть poisonous, как и другие животные, хотя для фауны чаще употребляется веном (для змеиного яда, например). Poison встречается в текстах для описания химических ядов и отрав
Некоторые даже говорят, что If it bites you, it's venom. If you bite (eat) it, it's poison
