Phew, this one took a lot of time. It was an experiment with bigger references I proposed to 
sorakasergal.
I'm glad that it's done. It took me ages to finish.
I tried a few different workflows on it and ended up with something I like as the result. If you look closely at the edges of the character (between it and the background) there are no lines.
