For so the urge brought her further out and towards the evergreens. She could not tell if it was her own desire seeking the cold, or some newly acquired instinct from this which she had dealt many months prior. This instinct she did not fight. The traveling kept her mind at least partially distracted.
...
The night eventually came again, though. This brightest night. She felt it swelling up this time, feeling her blood pressure rise as if the setting sun and coming moon were pushing and pulling it through her veins. She took heavier breaths, making her way up to a sheer drop. In that moment it occurred to her what she could do to end it. Not often had she ever thought about the value of any one single life, but in the following minutes her mind raced to catch up on lost time. Not being immune to the philosophy of the commoner, she thought about how her life is worth less than even one more other she might take in the future. But part of her wondered if that was just a selfish excuse to justify ending the pain.
...
She looked from the ending below, up to the soft, rising light. As would any sane person in this situation, she shouted.
"Why?!"
Silence hung for a moment as she gazed into the near-complete circle on the horizon. Almost in an instant, while looking around at the trees in the distance and back at the gentle light before her, she felt a calm. She dropped to her knees, on the verge of tears. She felt something inside her let go. It was as if her shout to the sky was answered, and for a moment she felt peace and understanding.
"Why, indeed," she whispered to herself with an anxious chuckle.
...
What had actually been only a few mere moments passing felt like a serene hour. At once, her backbone snapped and she screamed in agony. However, the last resistance had already passed. She now welcomed what was to come.

A fantastic piece from ocdraco that I commissioned over six months ago, but never posted. I suppose I was waiting for a decent inspiration on what to say for it. ocdraco might be embarrassed by the art now that she has herself claimed improvement, but I still adore this piece and wanted to share it!
