While doing my research for my article about the Chinese Junk in the magazine "Pirate Tales", one of the things I really wanted to get an understanding for was how the Junk's sails worked. While they seem very alien compared to the typical Western-style canvas sail in many ways the Junk's sail is a much more sophisticated design. Also I found the use of separate watertight hull compartments to be a fascinating design. It is one of things I like to do with my art. It provides me with a focus to expand my knowledge of the world.

Chinese naval warfare of the past 600 to 200 years is something truly worthy to be researched. Before the industrial Revolution, the ship building skill and cannon technology in the Asian world should be able to create the kinda "Give them the broad side" naval battles as the Western World did. As far as I know the last set of major naval battles was fought between the remanant of the Ming Dynasty and the Manchurian Qing Dynasty, of course, I am pretty sure I still have a lot to learn about that.
