The two had always been good friends since they where 9 years of age playing at the edge of the woods and growing to be partners on hunts for food so when Birdy's name was selected in the lotto of unmarried youths in town she of course choose Ashlin as her beast mate. The Blue Hands Clan has made it a ruling that even if a youth is meant as a sacrifice they are also now members of the clan and get to choose which beastfolk they betroth.
