The background planet is actually an early earth like planet. The only traces of life on there are single cells organisms creating a purple hue that can be seen from space. You were right on a point tho, the planet/ scenery in the foreground is artifficial. Created on purpose to host populations from a system far away. Terraformed to be a place where carbon based creatures in need of oxygen could live !
