I figured why not and pulled together some factoids about my Gremble race's biology. The numbers on the chart and the numbers in this description correlate with one another respectively.
1) This is a Gremble in their anthropomorphic form. This is a rare form and only happens amongst the domesticated Grembles as it takes a nonspirit's positive energy in order to trigger it. This energy is brought upon by emotions and often times it's the strongest positive emotion, love, that will change them. Negative emotions can potentially reverse this effect, changing an Anthro Gremble back into their original dorm. RARELY is an Anthro Gremble born Anthro.
Note that anthropomorphic Gremble do NOT have visible genitalia. Only their jawline is a visible indicator of gender. as seen in 2 and 4, the females have a smooth jawline whereas males grow protrusions under their skin made up of cartilage.
2) This is an adult male in his original form. Ears are long like a beagel's and thick. Their tails are muscular, thick, and able to support their weight; it is able to wrap around things but Gremble oddly never use it really to hold items. It is used more for balance and climbing.
As you can see they have a type of overbite, their tooth structure grows directly from the skull and like a beaver's is always growing. They'll shorten their teeth by chewing on hardwoods and rocks. It's not unusual for them to break their top teeth but it does not cause them much harm, they don't have much feeling in them and it'll grow back. Inner teeth are not often seen. They're structured in typical omnivore style. Gremble have a strong bite and that is how they fight predominantly.
3) This is a young male, sized to scale and same aged as 1's Anthro female. Note that Grembles have a more stocky build than most creatures. Ears are always long, even in the young. Their behavior carries some canid-like traits. Examples of this behavior are seen most often in how Grembles communicate. Often in barks and body language. It is said they've adapted that behavior by observing family dogs and learned to emulate it for best results.
Do not mistake Grembles for a loving pooch however. Feral Gremble behavior is often unpredictable at best. The real constants are seen in how they enter houses. Via unclosed windows and doors. Leaving food out and a window open is the cause of many unintentional infestations. Feral Grembles travel in pairs. Females are often pregnant when entering a house. It's speculated that Grembles instinctively are drawn to households during the gestation period as a means of food and shelter.
It is hard to get rid of a Gremble infestation. Attempts at removing the creatures from one's home can be described as frustrating without the proper knowledge. Grembles are categorized as biospirits, this means they're a mana based lifeform. They can turn both invisible and incorporeal when in perceived danger. Do not approach a Gremble nest with ill intentions, this can result in many a vicious bite from the parents.
It has been found that certain herbs can be used in making an incense that is repellent to the Grembles. Often the local churches keeps these plants in stock and will smoke the creatures out of one's home for but a small fee. Some will even do it for free.
4) Gremble eyes are probably one of their most striking features. They're described as black orbs with white or colored light coming from out them instead of pupils. If you stay still at night and look into the forest twin spots of light peering back at you are a good indicator that Grembles live within your area. Some can argue that the gaze of these creatures and is what brought about a lot of the superstition on them being both unlucky and a bad omen. Disembodied lights moving about your home at night, appearing in your cupboards and cellars can be disconcerting.
Grembles aside from their mildly destructive chewing behavior and gluttonous appetites aimed at your food stores are in fact, not unlucky nor a bad omen at all. In fact, some households have taken to seeing them as protectors and bringers of good tidings. These people will even lure Gremble into their homes. Despite their association to goblins and gremlings, the Gremble are related to the Domovoi, a house spirit most often found in Slavic lore.
The main difference between the two is where a Domovoi can be seen often as a little person, a Gremble is an animal. Also, Domovoi are more malleable in their forms and have a higher level of sentience. Commonly taking on the looks of former residents of a household, diseased pets, and old men. Grembles in contrast will always look like Grembles and even when morphed, still retain Gremble features.
5) This is the color scale a Gremble's pelt can come in. They are varying degrees of white, grays, and black. Their skin is smooth and does not grow fur, feather, nor scale. Their hides are tough but soft to touch and warm. Markings found so far have included gradients from either light to dark spots, patches, and alternate colors on their feet, bellies, tail tips, and ears. Occasionally a Gremble will break from the norm and their markings will be in a vibrant color. Reported seen so far have been reds and greens; nearly always on a near black base. Why this occurs is unknown. Speculation is so that these dark colored creatures can stand out more within the darkness.
6) Seen is a newly hatched Gremble. These can be tamed when hand reared from birth. These domesticated spirits have been described as highly loyal and protective of their masters. Eggs have been taken from some couples' pantries and moved into the nursery have been known to happen. Raising a Gremble pup alongside an infant can almost guarantee no one will snatch away one's child and things such as rat bites will become unheard of. Children who keep Grembles as pets can explore the forests freely without fear for their companion's natural senses prewarn of dangers well enough in advance to avoid catastrophes all together.
7) Seen is an Anthro Gremble's hand. They are structured nearly the same as their nonmorphed brethren. In the morphing process more dexterity is gained in their hands. Elongation in the bone structure changes the forefeet into functioning hand that can grip far better than a nonmorphed's. As seen, the dewclaw gains mobility in it's function. An active grasp is now possible. However, due to the lack of of a second joint in their digits, morphed Gremble do not have as fine tuned a hand function as a regular person. They have the dexterity and motor function to write, albeit crudely. Anthropomorphized Grembles have higher cognitive functions that nonmorphs and can learn many a skill. Reports of a widow raising a morphic Gremble as a regular child states that the creature was able to talk, write, go to school, read, garden, and even cook. This story ends tragically it is said when the village deemed the child a bad omen and tried to drive of the pair. The collective negative emotions reverted the Gremble back into base form. The woman was incapable of changing the creature again. Whether this occurred or was a clever yarn from a morphic advocate remains unknown.
