
As I promised last week, here is a look at the type of helmet worn by the astronauts during their moon walks. Compare it to this Mercury helmet. The Apollo EVA helmet has sun shades over the top and on both sides, plus the reflective gold visor. Note also the red stripe on top that identifies this as the Commander’s helmet.

Lucky for you. My inner cynic frowns upon the fact that the Soviets pulled out of the race soon after and did not press further. I wonder, where we all would be by now if they didn't? Moonbases at least, probably.

If the Soviets had stated an objective of establishing a permanent lunar base, I have to believe congressional support for the US moon program would not have waned so rapidly. So yeah, I agree with you. Both nations would likely have bases there.
