Right now, I have two swords for fencing, this is my epee. Not so much a sport fencer, perfer the SCA style of rapier combat.
This is very light, has an excellent balance, and the Italian style grip gives excellent control over the blade. The quillions are great for fouling up an opponent's blade & Ive lost track of how many times that handguard has kept me in the game. The extra-large guard provides an amazing amount of protection, have yet to get jabbed in the hand or the forearm.
And damn does it look nice,
Details: Zen Warrior R8 Rapier, with some options: T90X 35" extra strong epee blade and their E6 milled aluminium grip (as opposed to the standard wooden one.) Its a bit pricey, but its far superior to the basic gear.

When it comes to blades, there is a difference. Bought mine from a company with a reputation for quality work & its justified. Blade had put up with heavy use and should continue for a long time to come.
Given the standard life from my friends' experience, got a good 2-3 years of life with the blade & I can replace it without haveing to buy a completely new sword.

I am into medeival reinactment & picked it up at a BIG event called Pennsic (www.pennsic.net)
Company is Zen Warrior/Triplette Arms & ALL my fencing gear is purchased through them. Want to say that their website is something like <www.zenwarriorarmory.com>

Personally, I find that the sword behaves more like and extension of the arm with the Italian grips. Pistol grips are great for thrusting, but as you said, they seem to lack the control. French grips, I find them incredibly uncomfortable.
Let people laugh at Italian grips. People laughed at me because Im not built like 'proper fencers' should be (Im built like a barrel and walk heavily.) They learned that when I bat their sword away, I have plenty of time to strike. With my targe (24" diameter shield) I can steamroller over their fancy footwork. And thats my smallest shield...

Yes, I agree. Mine was a foil or epee...can't remember (haven't fenced since highschool), with a small shield (bit smaller than yours), and that nice wrist strap, that basically melded my arm with the sword. I got a lot of stares too, and I remember when I was training, one old fencer was fascinated by the pure idea that I was using an italian grip, he hadn't seen one in years. xD And agreed, I hated french grips. And as for the pistols, I for starters never liked their style, it just looks stupid imo, and part of fencing for me was always the romanticism behind it. Having a weird plastic pistol thing on it just looked...off. The italian grip meanwhile, is simply beautiful.
Foil is the light and whippy one. Im personally not a fan of them, find them way too light and flexible to effectively use.
A lot of the medieval re enactors I fight with use Italian style, they would rather not go out at all than give up the quillions and riccasso. The pistol grips, they look like absolute shit.
There is a certain romanticism behind fencing. Its more about precision and technique than anything else and it a great exercise without having to worry as much about getting severely injured. Though, there is also a certain appeal to putting on plate armor and smacking people around with a rattan stick and bellowing insults at people in Old Norse.
