Heathen City#2 Fifth Snapshot
All of you have certainly followed the debut of Heathen City 2 With vivid Interest. As EF is just round the corner, it is time for me to push a last promo picture which I kept back.
The last bit of rambling on about how challenging a comic can be will cover the most dominant and the most underestimated aspect of the entire production; Page layout!
Here we can clearly see the European influences in my work: crisp, straight boxes (not unlike to Herge). Nothing snazzy and tilted, the straight layout emphasises the straight forward story. The only tribute to more modern comic writing and drawing was the use of overlay boxes within a page spanning picture. Whenever there is a picture over the width of the page, and small box images are placed above, the story has moved to a different location.
In this example, you can see an background shot to locate the action (the drive of the estate), and the reader chips in on a conversation which seems to be interrupted by something one of the protagonists sees through the car window. The background picture carries the secondary (but not minor important) information of where we are, whilst the actual buzz is going on in the car. You have a nice effect of the camera zooming in. The background is panoramic, the first box is a mid range and the last box is a dramatic follow-up of the view out of the window. As you can see, there is a lot going on, even with the very static and simple layout.
For a last time here my promo thingie: Visit www.heathencity.com Or pick up your copies at Eurofurence! I will be there if you want to have a word about my illus, or want a signature. Mind you, I will be busy with running the con. If you want to be safe on a word about the production of Heathen City, check out my SIG on Vector Style Drawing
