The third species in the MyLittleFurries.com was going to be an avian species but I am having a problem with the design.
Does anyone have ideas on how to design a cartoony bird?
This is meant to be a hawk, but the body looks like a chicken, and the long feathers may not work for animation. I can go with more texture for the tail feathers, but I would rather have the tips of the wings formed. I would like to use the end feathers as fingers as well.

I was in hopes of making the wing feathers thicker to work as fingers, but you are correct, they do not have the look I want or look apropriate. It would also help when printed in 3d if they are thick, which some thickness is required. I may know how to resolve with both ways working.
The plumpness was intentional in an attempt to match the thick look of the horse, kangaroo, and others for the series.
Thank you for your input!

Do you think this looks more accurate?

Thank you. It will be difficult to add all of the feathers into the model, but I intend to try. I will have to do alot of low polly modeling work on them to keep the feathers in.
I am making an animated series called My Little Furries www.MyLittleFurries.com and separately (for content) http://www.MyLittlePornies.com .
( They both send you back to my page right now, as I have not yet created a site for them. )
I hope once I get a few scenes I might be able to get some revenue going to be able to make a complete series of shows from it. It will have a real storyline (plot), and will feature key scenes on the adult site not shown on the main site (for obvious reasons.) Most importantly is that I want to animate for a living, and would be happy if this became my day job.

Make the legs smaller and more set towards the rear. Think of bird legs like sticks instead of meaty muscled limbs. The only things birds really use their feet for is to perch, which doesn't require too much meaty muscle, mostly sinew. Having said that you also need to make the chest and head a little larger for it to be a hawk-like bird. Hawks, birds of prey in general, have large eyes that tend to look 'mean' because of how the feathers gather around the eye, making them look like they have eyebrows.

Like so, there is a defined brow along the top of the eye. The neck is not connected at the middle of the head either, but the back of the skull sort of towards the bottom.

Aren't the legs farther forward?
I have found a better reference image then before; I will rebuild it realistic, then try to plump it up to match what I need it to look like!
I am trying to soften the intense look of the eyes; they are not going to be mean in the MyLittleFurries animated series, but I do want to keep the "eyebrow" ridges. any suggestions?
Same with the jaw line. Birds do not have one, but without the head looks off looking down.
On the bird legs: I know birds have three bones, with the upper leg being hidden by the top of the feathers of the legs. These upper legs are quite short. Should I ignore them when creating a skeleton to animate with, or do these bones move enough to be worth adding?

Could you look at this and tell me if it looks accurate? http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2700073/
Well I never tried myself on avians, because feathers are rather tricky... instead of modeling them out like that, i would go for a one polygon with alphamap version though. But then... having no expirience in the field, I guess this is about as helpful as most forum advice :)
