This little guy was outside our Lake Hughes site today. The top two images are ones I took from a nice safe distance with my cell phone. When I was in Pennsylvania this year, every time I caught a snake someone would say "It has a triangular head, it must be poisonous." Well, THIS is a snake with a triangular head. It seems to be a young Great Basin rattlesnake (a juvenile of which is seen in the bottom image). As soon as I saw its head I was convinced it was poisonous, and poking it with a shovel I got it to emerge enough to start rattling.
I debated killing it, but ended up leaving it alone. We have a mouse problem at the site and little as I like having a poisonous snake on the loose, I didn't want to kill it either. Hopefully it will eat some mice and cause no problems.

Bah, I have a pretty big distaste for that old prejudice, to instantly kill a snake for the crime of living. Poisonous or not, it has just as much right to life as you do, and if it isn't being a bother, just leave it be. Heck, I've even caught and released black widows (a good ways away, of course) because I really don't like the idea of senseless death.
I'm not much of an idealist, by any means nor do i think everyone should live everyone else a big huggy bunch. far from it. But lack of sense in anything, including needless slaughter of wild animals, is something that bugs me.
And there's my 25¢, take it or leave it.
