Oh, this yinglet seems smart, better show him this "perhaps" very valuable material. One cant argue with old peoples decisions.
Mori´rai´s practice of the pronunciation of the "th" sound makes itself known here.
Guess he wants to make the best impression he can, by mastering zhe "The"!

Considering how zhin his chell tooz is, he has a good chance at it. At lest with some words. I also noticed Mori went wiz most valuble for important. Not uncommon, and definatly a merchant mindset.
Amusingly, you can allmost see when the merchant's view of Mori starts to change, theres an almost audable 'ding' when he realizes that Mori is not a street rat type yinglet. Heck, he even asks for info that he does not know, giving Mori credit for having learned stuff, just on the off chance that Mori might have learned something he does not know yet.
I also see a second test, though I am expecting its not one hes expecting Mori to fail. He basicly just showed something that might be extreamly valuble, that someone is coming to pay a lot for, to some extent, its a test of honesty. Though again, I am not thinking its deliberate, more, it sounds like hes planing to give Mori the job, and wants to see how he interacts with a high value customer. The honestly/loyalty test is more insidental than anything else.

The shelltooth size is mostly due to how I draw yinglets ^^ Though his tooth is placed more to the right rather than in the middle "them gene hiccups"
So "th" sound IS more accessible to him, but its not an everyday thing he practices, as we see here.
The question Olivier asked him was more of a truth-question "So he says he lived there? Better ask into it, to see if he just make things up"
But he did get more than what he expected, since Mori also gave an explanation in how the caravan system works, a sign to Olivier that Mori´rai might be really into this.
I can say this much, Olivier is a very capable merchant, "how many merchants have their own marble floor?!"
The reason why he showed him the stargold piece could be a great number of things. Might be a test as you say, might be him that got into a good mood and did an impulsive act.
But we will definitely get to see more this this gentleman.

I would say it is more the arrangement of front teeth than just the shelltooth size. He actually seems to have a decent set of small teeth at front, so that if he tries he is able to form a seal enough to say the "th" syllable. Though with the shape of those teeth and the small tongue it still requires effort.
Yinglets ARE able to make "th" sound, but it takes great effort to do it all the time, so they just go with their natural "ze"
Mori´rai is able to pronounce the "th" sound easier because his shell tooth is placed more to the right side, rather than in the middle.
But as you can see, if he doesn't focus a bit, he quickly goes back to "ze" mode.
