The child stirred to the feeling of something tapping them. They could hear a faint sound. It became an echo, the shaking was more violent now, the voice frantic with panic. Then they opened their eyes, jolting awake with a gasp. They nearly shoved the flower over the edge of the bed. Thankfully he managed to pull himself up right with some extra help from his vines.
“H-hey! Watch where you use those things damn it! You nearly knocked me over.” a familiar voice whispered loudly in annoyance.
She rubbed her eyes, blinking twice before seeing the flower, grinning sheepishly, her face coated a rosy red from embarrassment as she gently pulled the plant pot Flowey was sitting in towards her.
"Thank you. Let’s not mention anything about the fact that I nearly fell off the bed and soiled myself in fright to Smiley trashbag please.”
The girl smirked then laughed a little too loudly at the flower’s sour reaction, but was hushed by him with a quick press of a vine to her mouth. “We have to stay quiet. I don’t want to wake him up,” she nodded, having the flower release her from silence.
“Come on, I need to… talk to you. Outside.”
Carefully slipping out of bed, she cradled the flower into her arms, quietly sneaking out of their room after seeing a snoring skeleton in deep sleep. It didn’t seem like he was going to wake up any time soon. That made her smile, knowing their dunkle was having a nap for the first time in a while without having to worry about anything.
It was fairly quiet down in the living room. Only the whispers and crackling of amber flames dancing in the blackness of the fireplace’s jaw filled the empty space with sound.
Sitting comfortably in a giant plush arm chair was a large goat dressed in a purple robe decorated by a symbol in white- three triangles with an orb and two feathered wings in the middle like a crest. Though she might have looked comfortable, her face wore the expression of someone who was very worried, her fingers drumming on the arm of the couch while she waited for responses from the monster she was calling on her cellphone.
No avail. Seemed like she was going to have to take matters into her own hands- or rather paws now- given the fact that her husband could be in trouble. She couldn't see into the future or anything, that was plainly obvious. No kind of monster was ever born with such an ability. She could feel it, as most women do, she had what they called a woman's intuition- it allowed her to sense the minor changes that were taking place, even if it was outside far, faraway.
She knew he could be in trouble because she felt it in the air... she also knew, because she would make him pick up the phone if he was on Sentry duty or even at Grillby's. She also made her children do the same when they went out for a long time. It was a rule she made among her small family to do that so she knew exactly where those two were during certain time periods.
Quite rightly she was concerned about his wellbeing which is why she was calling. Though she knew Sans was strong and could often handle messy situations pretty well. She had a lot of faith in the skeleton.
She was more worried about, her child. Though she knew that Chara would often come by, sometimes with Frisk and other times on her own to visit on the weekends.
She felt that something… was different this time… they <i>didn’t come.</i>
It was very worrying. She realized by this point that it was up to her as the mother of those two to find out what had happened to her daughter. The first thing she would do is head for Snowdin as she knew her other child, Frisk was under the care of the royal guard Undyne as well as Flowey.
She got up from her chair, fastened her midnight cloak and pulled the hood over her face. She was prepared to face anything that came at her, no matter what it was.
Toriel was filled with Determination.
My child… wherever you may be, I hope you’re safe. I’m coming to rescue you.
It wasn't all that strange for the reptile to be frantically searching through her shelves in the dead of night at 3 AM. Ever since that horrible nightmare, weird and strange on goings have been suddenly occuring out of nowhere and she was desperate to know why. Alphys had been trying to figure out who it was that kidnapped her daughter. She spent nearly two weeks of sleepless nights worrying with a lot of unanswered questions whirling around in her mind.
Who was responsible for the kidnapping?
What was their reasoning? Their motives? and why her?
M-maybe.. just maybe, s-some h-horrible demon w-wants revenge on us for whatever t-twisted ideas they h-have in their m-mind she thought to herself.
As she rummaged about her companion was doing what she did best, spawled lazily on top of the covers and curled up in a ball Galaxy was asleep. Not that it was helping a distressed Alphys in anyway of course.
.... But that being said.. she would be lienent on her little friend because she fought bravely by her daughter's side and tried her very best to protect the girl from harm. Galaxy was still recovering from her injuries. The reptile looked at the sleeping cat for a few moments who was banaged from head to tail. Thereafter she turned her attention to her bookself.
Nearly into an hour of knocking down half of the bookshelf she still couldn't find what she was looking for. Sighing, she decided to take a seat on the bed for a bit, running through her thoughts for the tenth time.
S-so.. if what Galaxy said she saw was true then.. maybe if Frisk comes this way tomorrow I c-can ask for help. Black vines... I wonder if it could be... "No.. t-that's just a s-stupid idea...h-he fell and d-died in the C-core years ago.." she scolded herself "I guess for now I should check the monitor and see if anyone's coming" she strolled over to the desk and stared at the screen for a few minutes, checking multiple times like she always did. Alphys was a very cautious person, especially when she didn't have all her time spent watching anime.
... There didn't seem to be anyone on sight, which wasn't unusual. Figuring she had nothing better to do, she was going to do exactly that- watch some anime. Though before that, she told herself she had to call Undyne to arrange for Frisk and the others to come the next day.
She slowly bought the phone to her ear after dailing the numbers as she waited for the buzzing on the other end to stop. Soon it did as her friend's voice echoed through the other side.
"Hello, this Undyne at ye...service." she sounded tired, she disrupted her from sleeping. Alphys felt her palm sweating and herself trembling a little. She had a lot of trouble when it came to speaking on the phone. But she told herself she would finally get over her fears today.
She breathed deeply and started to speak with every ounce of courage she could muster from inside herself.
"U-um... h-hi Undyne. I-...i..it's m-me."
"Oh heya Al, whatcha... doing up this late? Ye know it's uh... 3 AM in the mornin' right?" the fish gave a yawn.
"W-well... yeah.. it's j-just that I um... I um... just wanted to talk to you to a-arrange a b-bit of a m-meet up." she felt a bit of a panic rising as she inwardly breathed again to calm herself.
"Oh... yeah? Well sure we can meet up tomorrow if ye want." Undyne sounded happy, Alphys smiled relieved.
"O-oh um it's not for us... I was actually wondering if y-you c-could ask Frisk and Flowey i-if they could c-come over t-tomorrow. I n-need to ask for t-their help in g-getting A-aurora back. I- j-just can't take any more of it... I-I know s-she's out there... a-and I j-just... want her back home..." she felt herself sniffling, tears pouring down her face.
Udyne felt awful... hearing Alphys cry like that over a kid who was like a daughter to her must've been heartbreaking. She honestly wished she could rush over there right now and give the poor reptile a good comforting cuddle.
"Hey.... Al.. don't ye worry, alright? I know things may seem bad right now, but I have a lot of faith in those two. There are quite a lot of strong monsters out there searching for your kid too. The search party are doing their best right now. Cheer up, okay?"
"Y-yeah... thanks Dyne... I know I can always count on you to cheer me up because.. y-you're the best. I'll... see you t-tomorrow?"
"Heh, sure my lil doll."
After the exchange, the phone on the other end hung up and Alphys put the phone down. She felt herself flush, smiling a little more. She felt warm and happy whenever Udyne called her that. It was their little thing. Undyne always nicknamed her that because the two knew they were very close friends.
She felt her sadness returning. So to cheer herself up she grabbed an episode of the Legend of Fish Knight from the shelf. She absolutely adorded the series, often re-playing her favourite episodes all the time.
And I especially loved it when she saves the princess.. she siged dreamily, she always felt that Iona always reminded her of Undyne for her strong sense of justice and her fearless nature. 'I k-kind of w-wish I was more like you sometimes...' she knew she was talking to herself, but she always felt better whenever she thought about her.
It was always times like these she wondered how her friend was doing lately. Missing her company over some jokes, sugared honey buns and golden flower tea while they sat on the sofa together anime binging, sometimes talking about girly things that girls often do- like dying their hair and what kind of new clothes they should get over the weekends.
To be honest, Alphys knew she didn't have hair, but she always wanted to dye her scales a fierce red. In any case, she knew her best friend was working to protect the Underground, and that's why she often looked up to her, because Undyne... was her source of inspiration.
As she walked past the screen again, she thought she glimpsed a shadow of a figure. Stopping, she squinted her eyes closer to the screen but didn't see anything and shrugged as she opened the T.V and slipped in the DVD.
She suddenly found herself yawning from tiredness due to exhausting herself all night and hardly getting much sleep during the past few weeks. She realised it had finally tolled on her. Halfway through her episode, Alphys had fallen asleep.
The next day Frisk was rudely awoke with a loud crash into their room as the door swung open with a violent BANG!
"YO! PUNK! It's rise and shine baby!" came a familiar female gruff voice.
"Whaa!" the little girl literally jumped out of her skin in fright from the sudden intrution. She wasn't expecting anyone this early, and was scared it was someone who was going to hurt her- but soon relaxed when she saw the familiar tall fish monster. "Oh.... it's just.. you" came the reply "Just a little...more sleep.." she slumped back into the covers.
"Get up right now! I ain't having ye take after that lazy sack of bones!" she roared, aggressively tearing the covers from Frisk that made the poor child shiver from the cold air which she only felt now.
"H-hey! Don't be so rough on her!" Flowey moaned tiredly with a scowl on his face, popping up from beneath his friend's side and giving Undyne a angry glare.
"Who said ye could butt in! This is apart of Frisk's training! I gotta be rough!" retorted the fish
"Well at least be a bit more easy on the first day! When someone wakes up from their sleep of course they're going want some time to rub it off. Besides, Frisk isn't used to this type of wake up call." defended the flower.
"Ye wanna fight, seaplant?!" Udyne barked half threateningly.
"Bring it fishy," Flowey smirked confidently "After all, plant beats water any day."
The human girl stiffled a laugh at that remark "It's... okay.. she's right, I need to get up and prepare for my training.." the small child yawned and stretched
"Since when did ye become a gaming nerd? Seriously Alphys must've been gettin' ye into Fantasy Elementals way too much." grinned Undyne. It was a popular Adventure RPG game among kid and adult monsters alike, founding a vast and colourful magical world were you chose classes like wizard, royal vanguard or even beast tamer. As a hero you could band together in multiplayer co-op mode or go online to save the world with others around the world. It was their favourite game to play together whenever the fish monster came for a visit.
"Hah! At least I'm getting smarter, I'm proud to call myself a nerd!" he posed elegantly, golden bright sparkles literally flecked off the tips of his petals.
She didn't know what to say and just looked at him perplexed as she blinked. She thought that was a very random move he did just now. Frisk just laughed when she saw her reaction.
The pirate fish smiled a few moments later "Good! That's the spirit. "Hey... speaking of which, ye wanna play some later?"
"You bet. Lets hope we'll have enough materials to build that new Ivy Dragon armor this time and then beat the plant out of that Mythical Boarax!" he smiled as he saw her nod.
The child smiled. Seeing those two get along was nice for a change.
"C'mon, now lass get some food down ye gullet before we head out" she ruffled their already messy hair.
"Haha, aye aye captain" smiled Frisk, appreciating the affection from her big sister.
After finishing from her business and brushing her teeth, the child was planning to put on her usual clothes, when she was suddenly attacked by a pair of clothing and some steel gauntlets, armor and boots which she felt weighed her down a little. She struggled to hold them.
"H-h-heavy... guess t-this is also apart of my... training?" she asked through puffs of breath
"What? ye think yer trainin' would begin when we only get to the trainin' feild?" the fish gave a toothy grin. "Put em clothes on and then wear the armour afterwards."
The girl did as she was asked as she changed into the dark ocean blue shirt and black shorts, then with some help from the flower, equipped the silver armor that was imprinted with a shimmering ice blue swordfish on its crest.
She struggled with heavy stomps to the kitchen. She found that it was already ready and plated for her.
"Yup, yer favourite strawberry and white chocolate chip muffin and and a glass of hot milk!" she proudly put a fist to her chest "Made by yours truly."
Frisk's eye's widened in surprise when Undyne said she actually made it. "W-wow.... sis! I guess... mum's... cooking lessons... have really paid off." she smiled then panted a little more to regain her breath. It wasn't easy trekking down the stairs with a heavy suit of metal on you, that's how she knew that training to be strong was going to be harder than she expected.
Actually.. I bought that muffin from Muffy's shop. Though I guess what she doesn't know won't hurt her. I really need ta work some more on my baking skills.. thought Undyne as a bit of sweat trickled down her fourhead. I guess I could always ask her for tips though. she smiled a little at that.
Flowey gazed suspsiciously at the fish. He could tell something was up with the way her expression changed. Oh really? Who knows what really happened. Maybe you bought it from that spider's shop.
Undyne felt the flower's gaze, and realized he was giving her the most creepy smile ever. "U-uh... what are you lookin' at seaplant?! Is th-there something on my f-face?!"
"No, I just thought you were hiding a little something back there." he smirked
"W-what are ye on about?" she grinned sheepishly, more sweat was pouring fourth. He could see it streaming down her face now.
Oh nothing much, just that a little something you said you made for Frisky-pie was maybe.. in truth bought from a certain spider's shop?" he sneered, his mouth widened with a crooked smile.
"I-I uh... erm..." her fingers twitched as she gulped.
"Go on just spill it. Frisk will understand, you don't have to hide it." He bought back the creepy smile. "Just admit it... you never made that muffin, you bought it from Muffet's shop!" he pointed an accusing vine at her.
"AAAARRRGHHHH! okay okay! Y-ye got me... I.. didn't make it." she sighed in defeat. "I just... wanted ye to be proud of me for once.."
Frisk watched as all this happening. She was going through the last mouthfuls of her muffin that she finished off with the milk before wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. She smiled at Undyne placing a hand on her shoulder. "Awww... don't worry sis. I feel like you've improved over these past 3 months. Your lamb and rice stew yesterday was amazing! So it doesn't matter that you bought the cake from muffy's shop. I had a nice breakfast. Cheer up"
"Heh... thanks kid." she smiled "you're right I am improving! And what's better than to..." she grinned at Frisk looking at her expectantly.
"Stay Determined!" the human happily threw her arms in the air grinning with her.
".... Wow, golly you sure get back on your feet real fast." he made an unamused expression, half disappointed she didn't cave in but then smiled and gave a chuckle at Frisk's eccentric self.
"So, how do ye feel?"
"I feel energised!" she shouted as she flexed her arms as if to show her non-existant muscles which made Undyne laugh.
"Good, punk! Onwards to the training field!" the fish roared, mounting the small child on to her back as she kicked down the door, but before they completely headed out, they quickly passed by Greater Dog and asked him to guard their home before dashing ahead, shooting at full speed out of the snowy, frozen town.
As the three of them were passing their way through the blue stoney cave of Waterfall, Flowey stared up at one of the huge waterfalls as they walked in silence.
For a moment... he thought he saw the tall human's reflection... that viridian shirt with the yellow stripe they always wore, the gold heart pedant that loosely hung from their neck, their chocolate lengthed bob that hung just a few inches from their shoulders, the black shorts that hung loosely above their knees, those ruby round eyes always looking at him with a mischievous intent.. and.. their kind smile spreading across their rosey filled cheeks. He sighed sadly, he missed Chara a lot. After what Frisk had told him, he didn't know how to wrap his head around it all, but... he knew he believed her, that his older sibling was still in her own body.
I wonder... if she's okay.. fighting whatever's taken control of her.. Chara, if you can hear me, please, do your best to..stay determined. Silent tears streamed down his face for a while before he wiped them away. It pained him to know some freak was out there using Chara for their own gain.
He then returned his attention back to the group, making a scowl at the fish as he knew they would have to get the door to their house fixed as soon as they retured home."Ugh! Undyne! You're gonna have to fix that door later." whined the flower.
"Yeeeah... we'll just um... fix it with a few planks of wood!" Flowey just stared at her giving her a look that said "Seriously?", Undyne had to hold it in from laughing at him as she saw his face, "I'm just pulling ye stem. Though guess it would hurt if I really did. Ya still have those bandages eh? hope your wound's been better since."
"Huh..? oh yeah of course it has. I just.. feel comfortable with these bandages now." he nodded at her. He knew his wound had healed completely over the past weeks, but despite the bandages being old and a little brown from being worn too much, he felt strangely attached to this piece of dead cloth. It became apart of him.
"I wouldn't worry about our house too much, Greater Dog is an adorable puppy, but he makes for a cool guard. Nothing's gonna happen to our house." the small child smiled.
"Yeah, I guess you've got a point." the flower still looked a little skeptic but decided he wouldn't worry.
Not long after, they arrived at plain stoney field that spread two meters wide. It was littered with ancient broken, crumbled aged pillars. Blue tufts of grass surrounded a flock of beautiful, glowing Echo Flowers. Infront of them laid a huge gushing midnight waterfall.
It always fascinated the two how big Waterfall always was. Once again they were awed by the beautiful waterfall and the echo flowers that glowed ever beautifully.
Something stirred with in Frisk's soul just then as she remembered a memory, back from when she and Chara were exploring Waterfall for the fifth time that day, just having one of their leisurely strolls.
*You feel mesmerised by the beauty of the waterfall and echo flowers, huh?
"Yeah.. it always makes me feel amazed whenever I visit this place." smiled the small child
*Do you not ever tire of staring at the same scenery all the time?
"Nope. I've always loved it here, I could live here if we had a home." Frisk gave her ghost companion a big grin.
*You're such a child. Chara smirked, playfully ruffling her friend's hair
"Heeey, quit that!" she exclaimed as she swatted her sister's hand away
*Pfft, you can barely feel my touch anyways Chara gave a cackle as the child glared at her with a pout.
"Meanie."
She saw Chara smirk again but then a warm smile played at her face.
*Knowing that you've been to this place 5 times already fills you with Determination.
Frisk chuckled "We're not in a videogame you know."
*Oh, I didn't know~ the ghost teased again sniggering at the child's reaction for a third time now.
*Being all serious though, do you think it would be a bad idea if we were to live in our favourite game?
The child shrugged "I wouldn't think so. How bad could it be?"
The two of them quietly sat next to eachother, all the while gazing upon the blue glow of crystals that twinkled that evening as the two were staring at the sky.
The small child smiled at feeling peaceful and happy for that moment. Chara had told her then that she reminded her of Asriel who always made the same reaction whenever they would come here on frequent occasions.
... Slowly a wind of sadness gripped her, at the fact that she didn't sense that something was off, that time she had a battle with her sister. It only occurred to her afterward that Chara wasn't in control of herself, but she was being puppeteer-ed by some other evil force that the small one still knew absolutely nothing about. It angered her to the core, knowing that this was really happening, fists went into a tight ball, shaking as her eyes began tearing up.
A hand clamped gently down on her left shoulder as she was bought back, facing Udnyne who simply looked her in the eyes in an understanding way.
"Hey, don't worry squirt. By the time you're as tough as a coconut, you'll be able to save Chara. I know ye will. And we'll be right with ye all the way." the fish gave a toothy grin. "Now wipe em tears. No more crying. No more regrets. Today is the day ye'll finally become a real woman."
At that, Frisk felt her negative emotions melt away a little bit.
*But.. can you really do it? Will you truly be able to save your sister when the time comes? Frisk heard the taunting voice from her dark shadow who she knew was right behind her and felt her doubts creeping back in- no, not this time.
This time she would change herself... and finally become independent. She was not going to let Ksirf or anyone else bring her down anymore. She was that determined to become stronger.
"Yeah I am." the girl nodded with a strong conviction " So we're are we gonna start from first?"
"Well since you know the basics of how to not get yerself killed and you know how to defend and attack back, we're gonna head into getting ye to tap into ye SOUL power."
"SOUL power? um... is it kind of like a spiritual essence? Only that we can't see it but, feel it?" she asked, not really understanding what her friend was saying.
"Yeah it's an energy that comes from ye soul so naturally ye can't see it but you can feel it since your emotions are the source." the pirate fish confirmed.
"Okay and I'm guessing... this will affect my body? would I end up losing energy the more I use my powers?" she questioned, wanting to make sure so she wouldn't use to much when the time eventually came.
"Yeah it would." the flower arched his head cranning slightly to face her.
"So... how would I bring out my powers?"
"Depending on how determined you feel about the thing your intent on, or the person you care about, that's what brings it out. Your SOUL power is connected to your emotions like Dyne said." explained Flowey.
At first she nodded quietly as if she was trying to wrap her head around it for a few minutes.
"You remember what happened just a few days ago? When you were coming to rescue me?" he gave her a knowing smile
She felt she couldn't remember for a while.. she was searching the pieces of her mind.. then she remembered how she blacked out all of a sudden when that demon shadow beast was going to kill her.. she shuddered- the thought of dying... it terrified her more than she thought it would. The flash back from when she felt a power surge through her and she mercilessly stabbed the thing with a beam that shot right out of her hand... and tore a hole through its chest before it evaporated into black shadowy mist with nothing to remain.
... It gave her chills down her spine just recalling that horrible memory.
She fell silent as she felt someone pat her shoulder. But one thing for sure was.. this feeling.. it wasn't reassuring. She could sense her dark counterpart near, whispering in her ear.
*You did a fine job killing that foul beast. This is what power feels like. Control that, and we could RESET... we could go back to finishing what we began all those years ago~ sang Ksirf *We could go back to the days when we enjoyed slaughtering all those wimps who stood in our-
"NO! I-I... I don't EVER want to go back to that! B-besides... I.. I didn't enjoy it! It was YOU! n-not... me."
*Oh Frisky-pie, you're just denying the truth~ YOU were bored remember? It was YOU who wanted to try a different route, just to see what the out come was. ... Sure it was me who took control over your movements, even when we were up against that comedian. But in the end... don't find it funny that YOU were the one to finish it? the ghostly tanned face shadow mocked her with a grin.
"....Yes.. I do. I remember I was bored. I did want to try a different route! But... I.. I never wanted to pick up the knife... you.. you made me." she responded darkly, but her darker self didn't so much as flinch. Instead a confident creepy smile played on Ksirf's face.
*Only because YOU gave in. Those words stabbed the girl right through her SOUL...
She didn't even notice Flowey tap her other shoulder until he spoke.
"Frisk... Are you alright?" that snapped her out of her argument with her dark mirror self as she soon realised that both the flower and Undyne were staring at her with confused and worried expressions that were painted on their faces.
"You..you were talking to yourself out loud. You were mumbling things about another route..." he looked at her concerned.
"I-I'm fine.. I was.. just remembering that horrible time we had at the hospital." she lied through a sad smile.
Flowey knew, he could tell when she was hiding something. Though right now, he thought it better not to press her for answers. He'd talk about it later tonight.
"Awww... come on now lass. Everything's gonna be just dandy. After all grumpy flower and pirate eye are here for ye! Arrrrgh!" roared Udyne as she noogied Frisk roughly.
"H-heeey!" the human girl giggled as she flailed helplessly.
"Yeah Dyne's right, so don't worry okay? we'll always be with you no matter what things are gonna be coming our way." he nodded "And oi, enough with the <i>grumpy flower</i> nickname" he pulled a face at the fish.
"Thanks.. you two." she felt herself brighten up again. Suddenly she felt light on her feet, before she knew it she looked down and saw that they were flying, or rather... just really high up. Both her and Flowey screamed in unision as they landed right on the other side of the field, an impact was felt as they shook and both her and the flower were gently dropped to the ground.
"ALRIGHT THEN! Time to start your intense training!" she roared, immediately bringing out a blue energy spear that was 1 meter long.
"Hey uh... do you mind being at least a tiny bit-" but before he could finish a flashing explosion already erupted, knocking both him and Frisk off their feet as they were violently flung backwards.
Emerald vines shot out from the ground and caught the human just in time before she made an impact as Frisk pulled herself up.
"Thanks.. Flowey." she said with relief.
"No problem." he made a stiff serious face as he glared at Undyne "It doesn't seem like she's gonna listen to us. Though she has a point." his vines glowed green as more blue spears came flying at them. The two of them made a syncronized movement as they barely avoided being hit.
"A real fight with our enemies won't be easy. So you'd better get used to that armor." a frenzy of thorn needles shot towards the fish from out of the earth, aiming to entrap her as they closed in with a sharp impact.
As Frisk watched in shock she thought he'd got her, not a moment later she heard a war like cry from behind them.
"Hah! Ye better try harder than that scaliwags!" bellowed the pirate, her left eye glinted with a firey excitement as she plunged right towards them like bullet.
Frisk felt a burning pain shoot right through her stomach- like she was hit by a stone brick. She groaned, clutching the part were it hurt. Soon the back of her head began to ache and she felt dizzy as she slumped to the ground after making impact with the wall.
Flowey groaned as well, rubbing his head. "Seriously... she needs to calm down or she'll hurt Frisk really bad." Just then he turned to see the child slumping forward. "Frisk!" he used extra vines to steady her. "That was a hard blow she dealt to you... She needs to know you're not at her level,
that STUPID PIRATE!" he yelled loudly enough hoping she could hear the last part.
*Oooh, that must've been a shock- knowing that your own friend hit you so hard. Are you going to just sit there and take it? Doesn't matter what you do, you'll always be a crybaby. smirked Ksirf.
No I won't. Just you watch Ksirf, I won't be hurt by your words anymore. Frisk said to herself.
"Ugh... I-I'm fine.." the human girl huffed, her eyes burning with fierce determination as she staggered to get up.
Flowey nodded relieved she didn't black out, "Alright now remember, focus your mind on your one goal, and use that to bring out your power."
She closed her eyes, calmly concentrating, feeling the surge of her SOUL power slowly resonating with her feelings and pretty soon she felt something wavering around her palm.
"That's it you're doing great. Now form your weapon." ordered the flower. "Picture in your head exactly what it is that you want. Who inspires you most, who motivates you!"
The more she thought about it, the faster she could feel her weapon materialising.
"Get ready to take the defensive! Here she comes!" shouted Flowey
*Now the real fun starts. For some reason, her darker self's echoing words felt encouraging to her, it was odd that a smile slowly formed on her face as she felt her arms rising. It was as if... the smile wasn't really her own and that part of her body was being controlled.
It was the least she had to worry about at the moment as cool aqua clashed with vemon violet.
"Heh, so... guess I'm the motivator!" grinned Undyne pretty impressed by the shape of the human's weapon- it was just as long as hers but instead of an arrow point shaping its edge, she noticed two curved razor sharp sickles on either end as she pushed Frisk back who was struggling to hang on.
"Y-yeah...you are!" she pushed Undyne back as hard as she could, using all of her strength to do so.
"Good! Now try and counter this!" she parried Frisk's dual scythe heading straight for a thrust jab to the child's chest and she narrowly avoided the blow.
Undyne's swift movements with another spear jab came as she felt another blow but felt herself half smiling crookedly, a feeling of twisted thrill filled her being. A flash of a gleaming silver eye was present on one side of her face as she felt that her darker-self slashed at the fish aggressively who dodged the attack, and this time, Frisk felt a hard boot to her face as she skirted, slamming hard on her back.
She felt tears form and drop slowly from her eyes because of the pain from grazing her arms and knees. She could hear Flowey shouting after her from afar... and she could hear the footsteps of the fish approaching.
"Is this all ye have?" she was coming closer
"Ye think it's going to be all fun and no one's going to end up bein' seriously hurt? Or maybe... even have a worse fate?! Frisk could hear her loud and clear as she slowly pulled herself up, her head hung low, her hair was covering her eyes as she stood there panting out of breath.
"If yer gonna get beat this easy-" Undyne raise her palm towards the sky.
"Do ye think Chara will ever be saved by such a weakling?! at those words that stung... just as much as Ksirf's, a torrent of emotions stirred within her- guilt,anger...
*Awww... poor you, all beaten and bruised. It's as if we were back to that time, were Udyne wasn't really your friend, and she wanted you.. dead. So, why don't you let me lend you a helping-hand, partener. her mirror self gave her a sympathetic look, silver eyes glimmering with mock.
No, I don't...need your help. Frisk voiced back in her head.
*Oh come on now, don't give me that. she pretended to feel hurt, ghostly arms encircling the child's shoulders. *Besides you've always been weak. What makes you think you can survive without my help? Just let me... take over. Frisk- you know you need me. We can work together- just give me your hand. If we don't, how do you think we'll ever save your sister?
The small child said nothing. She fully well knew she couldn't trust what her mirror self was spouting. She didn't care about Chara, she only cared about unleashing her power against all who stood in her way. But... despite herself fighting so hard to resist that little urge to reach out for Ksirf's hand, that part of herself... she felt had already yielded, because by the time she realised it, she saw her hands entangled with her negative self.
*Hee hee... I knew you had it in you. Embrace the darkness. was the last words her demonic self uttered before she felt a change within herself.
As the rain of blue spears instantly descended upon her like a bolt of lightening which burst into a dome of flames, she steeled herself.
"FRISK!" Flowey watched in horror as a blue dome of light erupted before his eyes just a bit of a safe distance away. Now she's done it! I'm gonna personally kill that fish! his raged voice rang in his head.
But before he could make a move the smoke dispersed, revealing a large blood red heart shaped shield that surrounded the tiny form who lifted her head. Her right eye was closed, scarred by a slash that wove its way horizontally down her cheek. Streams of warm blood tickled down the sides of her face- her left eye glowed pure, as silver as the moon as a meancing purple wisps of aura was pourimg out of her left eye. Her armor was charred from the flames.
Udyne began to feel worried when Frisk didn't say anything, for some reason or another, she felt the atmosphere had shift into a dangerous zone. As though the person who was standing a few meters away from her in the field was no longer Frisk.. but someone else. She saw them drawing their weapon as an eerie smile spread across the child's face.
*Did you honestly think that was all I really had? she dashed forward swinging her dual scythe at the fish who made an instant clash with her flashing blue lance.
*You think that I'm weak? Just because you have the strong belief that I can't contain my own power? she swung down again pushing her back as she laughed, a demonic black aura flowed from her purple weapon morphing itself into two giant blades shaped like two crescent moons, as pitch as the soul she had. She sneered, seeing Undyne's expression of widening disbelief and surprise.
*Well, you're not wrong. I prefer to spread it out and go wild! large waves of darkness shot the fish catching her in the attack. The whole field erupted as a powerful gale blew over.
The flower, who was a good distance away from the battle found himself latching on tightly to one of the large rocks to prevent himself from blowing away. He was glad for the feild being firm otherwise he would have been torn from the root.
On the other side of the battlefield Undyne picked herself up slowly from the ground- the weight of her body swayed due to her armor, making her wobble a little but she managed to stay steady on her feet. If she didn't stop that demon right now, Frisk might not come back to herself. So she came up with a plan that she would let this thing, come to her.
"Heh, wow ye really are strong. I didn't... expect such raw power." she grinned letting her suprise show once again. "Honestly, I'm terrified." she mocked, wanting her to believe that. She didn't expect that big power, but in reality, she felt confident that she could make Frisk over come this monster.
*You don't seem so scared to me~ Ksirf chimed sweetly, and Undyne felt their was a look of craziness behind those eyes of hers. There was something to them she only noticed just now- they no longer shone a bright burgundy brown but deadly silver grey. *Don't worry, I'll make you fear me. she grinned, her mouth widening with black goop that slowly started to seep out and her pupils as small as peas, surrounded by black holes which made the fish flinch a bit. It reminded her of a demon from a horror film.
She not as stupid as I thought. She catches on fast, I'll have to find an opening and get her. Undyne said to herself.
The fish monster braced herself as she saw the child pulsing with the dangerous black aura, her dual scythe raised high in the air.
*You know something, Dyne-y? I've always hated you the most. she felt their soul's colour overlap from red to jet black Every time my partner went down... you would show no mercy and shoot them without remorse. So why don't I ask you one question.
*Why should she have to give someone like YOU, who doesn't even deserve it, Mercy?! she spat the word out as if it was venom. Shifting her stance, her dual scythe split in two as she maneuvered her arms into a crescent moon shape.
*You shouldn't even have the nerve to show your face. Fall to the darkness of your fears. The scythes glowed unleashing razor sharp rings that morphed into a giant crow. Its eyes glinting a poison purple.
Udyne swiftly dodged right and left just as the crow went diving for her each time. She felt something stir within herself as the demon's question echoed in her mind... she felt she was right, why did she deserve Frisk's forgiveness? But... she couldn't remember doing it that many times... though one thing was for sure, she couldn't hide the fact that she did do it.. suddenly she felt a burning to her chest as she was driven back and thudded to the floor once more. Blood oozed from the side of her face and across her chest where a huge gash had opened up from were the black flames singed her.
It wasn't so much the physical pain that had hurt her, it was... her <i>guilt.</i>
Why was she so afraid of that dark memory, of something that happened 5 years ago. As she stared up at the grinning child who laughed in her face, she saw Frisk's sad and pained face instead. How could she call her a friend, knowing she hurt her over and over again...
*Hee hee...how sad. Just look at you, so dispirited from being reminded of such an awful time. Ksirf grinned coldly I guess that's what guilt does, makes you lose your fighting spirit. Oh boo hoo... It's no wonder hates you. the demon gave a mocking sad pout, then laughed.
As those words rang out... those two horrible words stabbed at her like a chainsaw slicing a tree in half. It hurt her so badly... it made her slash wound feel like nothing... as they echoed repeatedly in her mind like a broken record and she couldn't bear it.
As another set of black crescent waves came at her she barely rolled out of the way from the first two and and attempted to block the few that cut through her arms as the grazes seeped blood.
Suddenly without any warning she saw Ksirf materialise in front of her and swung down at her again, as she was slashed twice once more, the blades cutting her shoulders. She howled from the burning sensation.
She felt herself growing weak as she clashed back each time, she was begining to tire from avoiding all of the attacks the demon child was throwing at her. She threw jab after jab, after jab, all of which this crazy kid was effortlessly avoiding like it was nothing. Undyne was starting to become really frustrated, as she made for one final thrust.
Ksirf hung there on the spear as she made a sound. She'd finally got her, the fish monster grinned, but then slowly realised something was off when she saw her opponent smile crazily.
*Ouch... that really really hurt. her soul suddenly revealed itself were the spear went through it and the fish....was reminded again... the horrified expression on her face, Ksirf savored every moment of it. *.... Just kidding. How does it feel, knowing that's exactly where you stabbed Frisk. Right in her chest.
"N-no...That's...that's not true..."
*No use in avoiding the truth Undyne~ You killed her right there and you know it.
"I said...SHUTUP!" she bellowed as she thrust her spear outwards from her and aimed again. She frozen when she remembered Frisk's tear stained face, the utter fear in her eyes as she was backed into the corner.... with absolutely no way of escaping.
*Exactly, you're just a cold-blooded murder. a sly, icy smile spread on the demon child's face.
"I..I..." she heard her weapon fly out of her hands as the child booted her under her chin sending her toppling backwards and then another kick flew at her stomach that sent her keeling to the ground.
As she stared into Ksirf's cold, unforgiving eyes, their arms lifting over head for a final blow... she felt herself shrink... a knot had twisted, gripped her heart. This feeling...She couldn't put her finger on what it was at first... but then... it hit her.
She was scared for the first time in a long while. The fear had settled into her glossy eyes. All she could hear now was Ksirf's un-ending chilling childish laugh, that demonic laughter which would always remind her of who...she truly was.
*Feels good to be scared, doesn't it? the child's eyes were a soulless black again.
*It's okay, you won't have to suffer anymore. And neither, will... my partner. as a black wave of hate descended to deliver the final hammer of judgement, Udyne felt... that this was it...
Looks like this is the end for me... heh... well I guess.. it's what I really deserve. After all... I'm just a cold-blooded murderer.. Just as she was about to give up she saw the child struggling in the middle of her attack.
And to Undyne's utter shock and surprise, she thought she heard something else, as if it was Frisk's voice this time.
"It's not true Undyne, I don't hate you. You're not a murderer. It doesn't matter what happened back then because... I forgive you." the fish felt a spark in her body, as if her spirit was being revived.
Frisk was fighting back. She knew what she had to do now. Udyne....felt Determined!
She found herself roll as she barely just avoided a deadly slash from the girl's weapon. She rose up, her soul glowing with a new radiance... as she readied her spears again, her eye shone with a burning yellow flame as she now realised that feeling guilty about her past was what this evil thing wanted all along.
"I'll admit, ye had me for a moment there. You really did bring me down." as she saw Ksirf smugly evade all her spears. It's what she expected her to do. "It's true I did hurt Frisk in the past, it's true I did try to kill them when we weren't friends back then." she saw another black wave coming for her and immediately rushed past, appearing right in front of the demon child as she grabbed her by the collar of her shirt, grinning a sharp confident smirk as she saw her surprise "But there's one thing that yer forgettin'-" she threw her across the field again.
"Ye'll never understand the true bond that me and that squirt have!" a spear in the shape of lightening flew straight for Ksirf.
Just when it was going to end, she felt something taking over, fighting to gain back control as soul changed from black to red and back again. Finally regaining control, Frisk's soul glowed victoriously and just in time. Undyne saw this and was shocked as she shouted after her sister, and Flowey saw it too. The child grinned weakly as she saw the flash of blue coming at her and used the rest of her strength to summon another sheild.
Luckily she managed to protect the rest of her body- she suddenly collasped to the ground, totally exhausted from using up all that energy just to summon that shield.
"Haaah...haaah...D-di.... did I do... it...?" she asked hoarsely, too worn out to even speak.
Udyne approached and made a toothy grin while she stood over the girl, the light of the blue cave illuminating her proud and warm eyes "Heh... well aside from that big slip up.. ye've become a fine warrior lass. You really surprised me..ye know. I never thought you had such a strong power hiding in there. ... I think that's quite enough training for now. You've already improved a lot just by summoning your weapon and your shield, I'm mighty impressed."
Flowey sighed in relief... Frisk survived the fatal attack. He felt himself smile all of a sudden. Maybe.. it was because he was proud that she was finally coming out of her shell that much more.
At first he was worried the training might have been too much for the child to handle, but now... he truly felt he made the right decision in asking Undyne. Though that didn't mean he wasn't going to have a few words with her about all of this as soon as they got home.
There was something he needed to ask Frisk as well though... that power he felt, that change. He realised there was something in her that he knew all too well... and it scared him.. because he was like that once.
The two of them gathered around the human child, gently helping her to sit up right.
As Frisk wiped her cuts with a few small pocket tissues, she felt happy that she finally reached a new level of skill- If I keep this up... then maybe just maybe I'll be able to finally save my sis. a wide smile spread across her face.
....
Then there was that slip up from when Ksirf took control and almost badly hurt Udyne...
How could she come to face her sis again if she.... couldn't control herself from giving in. She frowned feeling sad and guilty that she let it happen again.. and after all this talk about not letting it... then she felt her bad feelings go away and was determined to not let such a mistake happen again.
"That was some intense moves. Both of you really had it going there. Though you really surprised me, Frisk." the flower took out a roll of bandage from the girl's bag as he started wrapping some around her four head.
"Uh.. really? I-I... guess I didn't expect to come out of my shell like that." Frisk turned away red in the face from embarrassment.
"Oh sure you didn't, but hey you improved and that's what counts the most." he smiled tying a firm knot as he finished from mending her head.
"YEAH! You totally rocked just now! Tomorrow is gonna be even harder." Undyne cheered feeling the adrenaline for next day's training session already. She was that excited, she felt she was going to burst. It was her passion to make others stronger and train them to bring out their inner powers, that's what it meant for her, being captain of the Royal Guards even if she was a pirate too. But who said you couldn't have two jobs.
Hearing that made the child gulp nervously... she honestly just wanted a rest tomorrow. After today's events she was extremely tired- she felt she couldn't even get up without some help. Though she knew there was no arguing with her big sis, she was nervous to speak her mind.
"Hey Dyne, I know your favourite hobby is helping your lackies bring out their inner powers and all that junk. Seriously though let me just make one thing clear: CAN'T. YOU. SEE. FRISK IS IN NO CONDITION FOR TRAINING TOMORROW?! he yelled at the top of his lungs right in her face.
Undyne paused for a long while just staring at him. Then she put a hand to her nose making a waving motion. "....Pe-yeew! Man ye breath smells like ye haven't brushed ye teeth for a few days Flowey. Have ye been sleeping without brushing at night or... something?"
Frisk held her breath so hard to stop herself from breaking into a fit of laughter at that moment.
*... No offense to grumpy weed, but- her mirror self shrugged with a sly smirk *His breath reeks really bad, like moldy onions that went stale for weeks Frisk burst out laughing from her comment even though her whole body shook with pain.
Despite the fact that she didn't get along too well with her, and was still really upset for what she'd done- for once she agreed with her partner. Though she'd never admit to Flowey how bad his breath smelt at times.
Flowey grumbled inwardly "That's beside the point... Were you even listening to what I just said?!"
"Yeah yeah, of course I heard ya. Frisk needs to rest for a while before we get down to more training." the fish monster smiled at a yawning child. "I think we all need a break for today anyways. Don't worry punk, you don't have to hide it from me. If ye ever need another rest next session just say so." she saw the small human nod then gave her a pat on the back. Suddenly she heard growl from somewhere, finding her eyes pinning the flower.
"Hey, was that you Flowey?"
"No. Does it look like I have a stomache?" he gave her a grumpy stare.
*Oh, what's this? Do I hear a cry for hunger?~ Ksirf smirked, taunting her playfully.
W-what? Noooo... Frisk went red. She was too embarrassed, not wanting to admit that she really was hungry.
*Just admit it already. All that training has you starved.[/i[ she tutted gently patting Frisk's stomach.
Immediately the child's tummy responded to the touch as if to say <i>hurry up I want food!</i> the two looked at each other for a bit before bursting into laughter.
Okaaay.. maybe..I'm hungry. Just a little. Frisk gave a sheepish smile
*Of course you are. I could clearly see it in your eyes, Frisky pie~ She teased.
J-Just shutup already damnit! she pulled a grumpy face which only set off her dark self cackling even more. And you know I don't like that nickname!
*...
She paused for a moment, then a sly smirk crept on her face again "All the more reason to keep call you it~
Ksiiirf! Frisk whined inwardly grumbling as she heard her partner erupt into a fit of laughter then suddenly paused to stare at her for a while, soon she found her expression forming into a smile on her lips- as if in sync, she saw her mirror self doing the same.
Having these little bantering conversations with Ksirf wasn't so bad, she actually secretly enjoyed it. Even though she'd never admit it to her- but not having any real fights with her today... aside from a while ago, was actually pretty nice.
For the first time not counting the past years... she definitely felt a bit of a change between them. And it felt...good. But... something inside her still burned. She was still upset about the whole matter of what happened today. She wasn't going to let that slide by so easily.
Just as they were going to head back to Snowdin for the night it dawned on Frisk that she didn't exactly ask about where her dunkle was.
"Hey um... Udyne, I haven't seen dunkle around today. Where is he?" she looked at the fish questioningly. If anyone would have seen him today she was the one.
"Uhh...w-well all I can really remember was... seeing him at Grillby's last." she smiled helping the flower to lift up their human friend as they started walking back. She saw the human stare at her for a while as if somehow she knew she was hiding something. Undyne did her best to hide her discomfort as she kept her smile on- a few seconds later the human decided it was best to drop it so she nodded.
The fish sighed inwardly.. seems like the girl had accepted it. Though she could still feel one person staring at her, as if he couldn't believe her half story. She knew that Flowey was watching her.
Her eyes hid a guilty secret however- and it was one she intended to keep. Sans told her not to tell them he was headed by himself to rescue Chara. Even though he knew it was a suicide mission, he couldn't bear to lose Alphys as well. After all... they'd already lost one friend.
Who knows were Aurora was either. She didn't want to imagine the suffering that all of them were going through right now. She shuddered at the thought.
Tomorrow would be the day they would have to set off for Hotland. Undyne couldn't help but radiating with worry for both Flowey and Frisk when they would have to leave.

Okay so just a bit of a notice for you all and an update. I'm really really sorry I had to move the chapter to FA but because of DA's text limit, I couldn't exactly post most of it. I'm just happy FA had a bigger span for me to post most of the story here. I struggled all night just trying to get this up and I couldn't fit the whole story in. So... I've decided to split it up into 2 parts. One focusing on Undyne and others and next part will be focusing more on Sans and a bit of his dark past.
Will be posting the next part ASAP. I hope you guys'll enjoy this section of the story for now and let me know what you think.
So for this chapter, I wanted to focus on Frisk's training, as well as a bit of a friendship development between her and Ksirf growing and some angst and past regrets from some of the other characters.
For those who don't remember Ksirf is Frisk's negative manifestation, she was born from her negative emotions and will do all she can to bring others down with their past regrets. That's just the kind of character she is.
Also just wanted to deeply apologise to those of you who waited so long for this chapter to be out and I'm so sorry I took so long to get it here. But I'm very grateful you waited.
With all my love feel free to make fanart of Virustale.
