It was a while since he'd taken the tortuous trek through the boiling terrain of Hotland, but despite being a large bag of bones he felt the wetness of sweat dripping from all over his body. Dang it must be around 70 degrees right now. Heh it's funny they stated it was s'posed to be cold tonight. he spoke in his thoughts. He was wearing pretty warm stuff however, that was likely the other reason he was feeling so hot.
He decided to slip off his ice blue jacket and tied it around his waist revealing a dark orange short sleeved t-shirt with the centre imprinted with red maracas and a mexican hat with text imprinted It's spicy. "Phew... that's better. Good thing I bought some water with me incase I needed it." Sans gulped down a bit of it from his flask, feeling a little more cooler.
He could see the lab up ahead now so he decided not to waste anymore time trying to walk there and just teleported. As soon as he entered the first thing he saw... was a gloomy, dark empty room. It was while since the skeleton last visited this place, but... he still remembered a few things about this room at least.
The large three seater couch that normally sat square in the middle of the room infront of the large, broken and shattered 32 inch wide screen T.V was tipped over on its side. A wooden table that always stood near the couch was also thrown aside, a white table cloth was stained with what appeared to be either water or juice. He knew it was either one of them because a cup was lying not to far away from the place- popcorn was also scattered about on the floor.
As he scanned the table a bit more he caught a glimpse of something red- on closer inspection he noticed it was large drops of blood that seemed to lead a trail directly all the way ahead. It still looked fresh-
The killer is definitely still here he thought. So he made the descion to follow it.
The ceiling lights of the long shadowed corridor flickered dimly as though the building were alive, taking its last few breaths of air before death. Light blue walls which were once filled with a warm amosphere dulled to a dead grey, smeared with streaks of crimson- he anaylised the floor, his sockets soon widened, and a chill ran through his spine. The floor was littered...with dust. Food bags were torn apart and bits were strewn about, electrical wires hung loosely from the walls and more trails of blood seemed head into that one direction.
He shuddered-this grim scene reminded him of something that would come out of a horror film. Somehow.. even though it was less than likely Alphys would have ran all the way outside, he knew there was only one place she would run to and hide if she or her friends were ever in danger.
It would be the most logical conclusion since all the trails seem to lead.. to that elevator. he fit the pieces together. If she was down there- he knew that thing would be too. He never liked lifts at all, he found himself feeling too afraid to step in- closed spaces were his worst nightmare, well.. one of them to say the least. Luckily for him there was no problem getting round it.
As he traveled down with another flash of blue, he landed safetly on his feet but soon tripped, nearly falling. He heard a scuttling noise, feeling something hard under his shoes. Although he couldn't see anything because he was now in total darkness, he knew he had to be more careful the deeper he went, because anything could happen.
Wandering around this place bought back very chilling memories for him... It was during that one time... when a professor everyone has long fogotten about now, had done multiple tests on him. Though it wasn't the professor that frightened him,Dr.Gaster was a kind man. Albiet stern when he needed to be, but he cared about everyone's welfare. Of course he had always looked up to him, after all he was his and Paps' dad. What really gave him the trauma...was something else...
He remebered it... as though it only happened yesterday.
"Now Sans, do not be alarmed. This is for the benefit of your health. It may sting a little, but this medicine has been helping to develop and improve your mobility from the day you were born. You've been doing well over these past 2 months." A tall skeleton with two different coloured eyes of amber and lemon beneath a pair of clear round glasses dressed in a light blue sweater, dark grey trousers and a white lab coat smiled reassuringly at him.
The shorter skeleton was more relaxed than nervous as he shifted into a more comfortable position, testing the movement of his left hand carefully... he smiled it was getting better. He remembered the time that Gaster was telling him a story when him and Papyrus were newborns. The doctors had told him and his wife that Papyrus would grow up to be a healthy and strong child- but...the breaking news... was that Sans may never be able to move.
His dad would have none of it. He travelled all over the Underground, even struggling through the harsh rain storms and coldest weather, even when he was tired from working all day through the night just to get that special medicinal plant which only grew at the far northen reaches of the kingdom to cure his son's illness.
He nodded not really feeling afraid. He was 13 years old now- he was used to the needles.
There was something he had always wanted to ask his dad until now, but he was too hesitant about it. So this was the day- this time... he would finally ask about the project Gaster was working on.
"Hey uh... dad." the little skeleton nervously tugged the bottom of his cool blue shirt as he winced a bit in pain, feeling the needle poke into his arm.
"Yes my sweet little bones?" his father sent him a warm and calm look
"There's... something I've been wanting to ask you for a while now. A...about that project you're working on.." he grinned, curiosity vivid in his lemon eyes
"Ah, so you're interested I see~" he smiled knowingly, also staring down half level at another monster- an 8 year old little orange reptile with silver glasses who was also wearing a white coat over a red dress. She was shyly peeking from beside the bed, gently holding Sans' other hand in concern.
"...How about instead of just telling you about it, would you both like to see it?" he saw a spark of excitement in the girl's eyes.
"Y-you're r-really going show u-us what y-you're making?! F-for real un-uncle G?!" she shouted excitedly.
Gaster knelt down to her level giving a little chuckle "Indeed Alphys. It is my passion to teach those seeking knowledge. I find it quite admirable a girl your age has such an interest in science." he passed his hand over her head.
"O-oh my gosh! I-I can't wait~" the little reptile squeeked happily, but eyed her big friend feeling a bit sad. "B-but what about Sans..? I-I don't want t-to l-leave him b-behind.."
"Don't worry bout' me kiddo." he gave a tired smiling grin "You go on ahead. I'll ketchup with ya in a bit."
The small reptile leapt up and gave him a hug "P-promise y-you'll come soon?" she looked at him expectantly.
"Yeah of course I will." he grinned at her, patting her head with a boney hand.
It ended with him saying his goodbye to his little friend that day for the time being... His mind then took him to a scene where his dad and mum where showing him, Paps and Alphys their pride and joy.
Papyrus and Alphys were both taken aback by how huge the underground laboratory was. They were running around playing tag with each other- Sans was just staring off in the distance as his electric wheelchair moved him forward; he was sat deep in his own thoughts.
He was wondering what it is that he'd see.
They'd reached the "DT extraction room." it's what his dad had always named it because they were studying about the substance known as Determination. He saw his parents standing infront of two gigantic cylinders- he also saw what seemed to be... two shadow-like creatures in each tank of water.
What was going on?... what kind of project was... this?
"Oh look Alphys! two giant....things. Um...what do you call them again?" the thin skeleton wearing a fire red scarf, orange jumper and beige shorts asked, a clueless expression on his face.
"They call them cylinders, Papyrus." Alphys answered smartly. She felt excited whenever she dished out even the most basic answer. She was really passionate about science.
"Well done sweetie. You're really clever." a tall albeino reptile who had amber orange eyes was wearing a blue blouse, dark sea green long skirt over blue heeled shoes and a white lab coat smiled warmly at a blushing reptile child. "Come, look over here you three." they did as she asked "Now, tell me dearies, what do you see?"
"Hmmm... I see two humans!" Papyrus beamed brightly "I hope they're friendly."
"Y-yeah they do l-look l-like them..." agreed the reptile B-but... s-something d-doesn't... s-seem right.. she shivered, feeling like someone was squeezing her chest. She felt...scared and she didn't know why.
Sans saw her reaction and wheeled over to her as he picked up the girl and wrapped his arms around her as a sign of comfort to help her feel better. "Yeah, you could say they're kinda shade-y ya know." he grinned comically.
"H-ha ha... g-good one." the 8 year old looked up at him and smiled a little. She appreciated his efforts in trying to cheer her up. Though she didn't know if he could sense it too... that something was definitely wrong with these creatures his and Paps' parents made.. then she saw a glint of worry flash in his eyes.. she knew from that blank expression on his face.
So.. she wasn't the only one then..
"Close enough everyone, however these two are made from dark matter, also known as negative energy."
"Um...if you don't mind me asking daddy, what exactly is negative energy?" asked Papyrus
"Excellent question son. Negative energy is when you feel something that isn't good stir your emotions, like anger for example- envy, saddness or the worst one.... hate are also other feelings of that type." explained Gaster.
"Oh.. I see. That's not good at all." he frowned.
"Cheer up dear. As long as you try your best to overcomel these kind of emotions, you'll always be a happy bones." his mother snuggled him into her arms kissing his fourhead.
"Then that is what I-the great Papyrus will do!" he cheered up quickly. "I'm going to do the best I can to help everyone see the bright side."
Sans heard the two of them chuckling then smiled. Knowing his that brother would follow that dream till the end made him feel happy.
"Well then I suppose it's time that we introduce you." he smiled calmly. He could hide it well from his children but as a scientist, he was extremely excited to know how these new creations would interact with everyone. He could also clearly see it in his wife's eyes, she understood Gaster. After all, Julia once worked with him in the same department when they were young adults.
Everyone heard the big vents hatch- white steam poured fourth from the large containers as if a hot spring was being born. Gloops of black liquid soon began to stream out, slowly rising, forming into the shape of two human-like figures.
The older short skeleton had a bad feeling about meeting with these new shadow beings.
Of course he didn't want to be judging just because of the way they looked, but...something within his soul told him these things... were bad. That something was going to happen tonight.
And as he precticded... indeed they had.
All he could remember from then... was his father yelling at him, ordering him to take Alphys and Papyrus into the elevator as both his parents fought with those horrible creatures from within a barrier. One of the shadow creatures got lucky... a long, trailing arm seized the skeleton's face, as he desperately tried to yank it. He remembered Paps and Alphys shouting after him in distress, trying to pull the thing free from him but the two ended up knocked down by two other arms.
.... When he finally managed to wrench it free, he felt strange on his left eye as fire of pain soon settled into it and he was yelling, covering it with his hand as blood trickled from his socket. With the other side of his face he saw the arms closing in for the kill on his other two family- but before anything could happen, he saw the three arms being severed as the door slammed into the grostesque things. They were still wriggling as the three children stood backed in the corner, all huddled together as the elevator ascended.. shocked and frozen with fear before the hands vanished into wisps of smoke.... then nothing at all.
Everything after that... was just a blur... it was kind of ironic since he was now in the very room itself- the DT Room.
As he continued following the trails of blood, they seemed to end right... here.
He scanned around the run down room- memories resurfaced from when this room was once filled with a collection of his family's medicines and herbs. He remembered... the large sunset vase which sat in the corner of the room filled with an array of colourful roses right next to the... large cylinder vents.
He found himself staring at the machines, slowly his body started walking towards them.. even though... he didn't want to.
A sense of fear settled at the pit of his stomach- and even though he didn't want to admit it.. he was afraid of facing the past.
This was were... his dad and mom had created... those things.
He was now curious about this whole thing... strangely enough. He wondered if the tech lab computer was still intact. Gaster went through a few days of teaching him the tips and tricks about how to use it back then.
After speaking his voice once he hoped it would work. ... No reaction seemed to be coming out of it so he tried again and waited.
"... You sure are taking your time buddy. Maybe you just need a little shock to liven ya up." he chuckled to himself at his own pun. Soon enough he heard a rattle that became louder and louder until he thought the thing was going to explode... but suddenly it stopped.
Bttzz...familiarising voice...Sans W.D...switch!
The searing light of the blue flash blinded him so he tuned down the brightness level to a comfortable zone for his eyes. As he searched through the files- soon he came upon something that caught his eye.
Project Virus
Datalog 901- Studying the ways Determination worked was a truly fascinating thing. It was the first task the king had ordered us to do for him. We named it Project DETERMINATION.
Working into weeks of studying, we discovered due to this magical- powerful energy, dead monsters... were soon coming back to life again. They were freely roaming about without a care in the world.. It was astounding, as if... they... hadn't lost their lives at all.
However there was indeed something that we miscalculated during further study- injecting too much of it into the bodies... made them fuse together as one.. morphing into...Amalgamates. It was.. an extremely terrifying moment for us. We couldn't tell the families what had happened to their loved ones, so instead we had locked them away in an underground basement, and... abandoned all hope for this project all together.
The laboratory would later become to known as the True Lab.
Datalog 910: It's been 3 months since Project DETERMINATION. The study of SOULS was our main priority now. Since the king had been struggling to keep the citzens of the kindgom from breaking into despair and losing hope from getting out from this underground prison, he's been feeling the pressure. As cruel as it was... he.. ultimately came to the descion under a new rule: Any human who fell down here must be harvested for their SOUL.
The queen hearing about this was utterly disgusted and shocked. It was... a striking blow to him when she stepped down. We were starting to see less and less of him since... Of course we worried about his welfare.. however, since the king was not keen on seeing anyone or hearing the progress of the SOULs we simply left him and carried on.
We discovered many things the more we researched about them. Each had their own personal trait. Depending on what it was- the colour would define that said SOUL. We eventually stumbled upon one that we had never seen before... this one seemed to give off quite a dangerous aura about it. We sensed... that it wasn't very friendly- but because our curiosity overcame our sense of logic, we decided to test it on an animal of subject.
The grim reality had smacked us right in the gut... when one of our colleagues was nearly killed.. the king had forbade us to continue with the study of SOULS.
Strangely, despite everything that had occured.. it only made us want to learn even more about this new black SOUL. We searched on finding a secure place in which no one- not even the king would think to search for us. Eventually we stumbled upon a hidden path during the night in Hotland. It lead us to an old and abandond building and we discovered a hidden basement in a lower floor that seemed large enough, and also quite spacious.
We made trial and error in trying to control its aggressive outlet of power, its urge to overtake the beings of others. Tried to extract it from all its bad qualities... and then we came upon an idea.. "what if we tried to give it compassion" so we set on creating these shadow creatures... in hopes of making them into good things that would help the monsters.
It took a while for us to come up with something to call them by and but we just didn't know. So, we decided it would do some good for the children to participate for some fun.
As no surprise to us, the children were very creative with the names they came up with. But as there were so many to choose from, we couldn't take them all.
A certain two had stuck out to us, and indeed they felt very special and unique among the rest.
After we left however... something.. something had changed within us.. in what we believed.. that we wanted to create these beings to help the monsters.
.... Or so we thought.. because deep down we knew.. that the real purpose in creating them.. was so they could be used as weapons of war in case we ever needed them..
We decided to eventually name them-[/i]
A cold, sharp wind cut through him at that sudden moment- a spine-tingling feeling vibrated through his body as he saw the computer's screen cracked- a silver blade lodged itself deep into the machine as the whole thing was giving off tiny sparks of electricity.
He could feel a pair of unfriendly eyes staring at him... maybe not at him.. but he felt they were gazing deep into his soul, drawing out his deepest, darkest fears from within the cage that he kept locked away at the pit of his heart.
He could feel that someone else was in the room with him right now.
This dangerous... horrible feeling just kept gawning at him.
He didn't want to believe it... he really didn't, because it broke his heart.
All he could do was mentally stare back.
He knew.. that without turning around.. that thing was standing there- her head titling slightly to the left side like some puppetered doll, smiling ever so creepily at him. Laughing at him. Enjoying every bit of the sense that he was rattling in his bones. He knew that monstrous freak was not his Chara- but it was feeding off her negative emotions- and the worst kind of it- her hate.
It was a while since he'd taken the tortuous trek through the boiling terrain of Hotland, but despite being a large bag of bones he felt the wetness of sweat dripping from all over his body.
