Twin robotic rovers, Spirit and Opportunity landed the surface of Mars in January 2004 and remained operational until March 2010 and May 2011, respectively. The Cosmosphere space museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, has a replica of these rovers. The circular object to the left is the high gain antenna used to communicate with Earth. Unlike the Viking lander before them which was nuclear powered, Spirit and Opportunity relied on an array of solar cells and rechargeable lithium ion batteries.

Just under a year now till Voyager 1 will be operationally unviable and the final shutdown command is given. Then another 5 years after that, it will completely loose track with Earth and at that point it will be truly on it's own.
