The Cosmosphere space museum in Hutchinson, Kansas is home to the Apollo 13 command module, Odyssey. That’s right, a tiny midwestern town is home to one of the most famous space vehicles ever.
This is a look at the heat shield which protected the craft from the intense heat of reentry. You can see the honeycomb structure. Each cell was filled with the ablative material by hand with a caulking gun. If an X-ray inspection showed a bubble in one of the cells, it was cleaned out with a dental pick and refilled. The heat shield had to work just one time and it had to do the job perfectly.
