There is "not being a good person" and there is "ok if I watch this guy I'm going to start shit with him or her sooner or later"
There are a lot of folk, including good folk, that I don't watch simply because I'm probably going to yell at them way too often. Its mostly a diplomatic measure.

This strongly reminds me of a story a friend told me... When I tried to get people to interview I remember him having told me about another friend of his who was downloading furry stuff "for his cousin". Being desperate at the time, I asked my friend if he could ask that guy if he might be available for an interview. The guy replied: "No, I don't know any furries and in that time I am going to a furry convention. Maybe I know some furries afterwards..."
I could no stop laughing when my friend told me about this.

Haha, this is awesome. I've always wondered about that. I'm surprised this hasn't caused more controversy like "I AM NOT A FURRY I JUST ASSOCIATE WITH THEM" or maybe even a "YIFF YIFF."
Also I always thought furry and anthro were one in the same BUT APPARENTLY I AM MISSINFORMED fdsfjsdhkf

the quote "show me your friends and i will show you your future" would apply here.
and the definition of furry is so loose not everyone shares the same view but for me a "furry" is a person who enjoys anthropomorphic characters and "funny animal" characters and has made an effort to find other people who enjoy the same thing. a furry character would be an anthro (but not all furry characters are anthro.)
i think that if you take that extra step to actually join a furry community (online or not) then you are not necessarily furry but at least curious. it is when you start making regular posts and contributing to the fandom with art, stories, music and even just journals you are furthering your interest and establishment in the community and therefore are a furry.
i also don't think people need to have a fursona to be furry (i am still not sure what it is exactly...)
so yeah, my opinion on the matter :)

To be perfectly fair, a large number of furries are pretty gross, and not solely because they have some weird fetish. The reason I associate with this fandom is because for the most part, you can find the best and worst of humanity in it, and more often than not, the best is worth seeking out. I honestly don't see anything wrong with using yourself as an internet persona on a furry site, considering human beings are creatures like any other animal. The only reason I have a chinchilla persona is because one night, a bunch of old friends (who were furries) started shouting species names at me and I eventually picked an interesting one for the hell of it. In the end, I come here because through all the sewage and stupidity, there's quite the handful of genuinely awesome people, and it's certainly worth it, regardless of the fact that I don't really like most furries.
too many words
too many words
I'm a total furfag but i know several people who use this site and are not furries. I'm not talking about people who draw anthro, fav feral porn, have an animal icon, etc. I'm talking about people who don't even have anything animal-like in their fav list.
There are many reasons to use this website (ie: knowing that you'll get more feedback than in DA), so i doubt that being here automatically makes you a part of the fandom.

So?
I (and a few others) once used a politician's fan forum as a playground.
Also, when some people say "i'm not a furry", they probably mean they're not a part of the fandom or don't identify themselves with it.
Do you consider Walt Disney, Otto Messmer, Friz Freleng, etc "furries"?

no, because there was no furry fandom around before the 80's.
look, i don't give a flying a fuck about what people do and don't do. say who they are or don't say who they are. i am just an artist making observations and sending them out into the public. it is the public that makes the definition of the art, not the artist.

Well, i'm just pointing out the flaws in your logic.
Human beings are too complex to be labeled in such an aritrary way. Following that logic, if a guy enters a gay bar for whatever reason, that would automatically make him gay, and a gay person would turn straight just by kissing a person of the oppossite sex.

Just to throw something in, on Beezle's point. If that same guy repeatably visited the gay bar, every day or week, possibly for years, would that not be a reason to be at least suspicious that he may be at least bi? Same applies for a gay person that repeatedly kisses the opposite gender.
I don't think the point was so much that if one automatically joins FA that they are a furry, but if they contribute to the furry community and possible draw some furry things, or favorites a lot of furry things, one would start to doubt that they were not a furry.

But what if those persons have different reasons to go to gay bar? I mean i know a straight guy who worked in a gay bar for over a month.
The furry fandom is a term made up by people with similar interests, so it means whatever the hell they and people want it to mean, and in this case the community is too tolerant towards the fandom's weirdest shenanigans (ie: fursuitting, having "fursonas", all those weird ass fetishes, etc) to the point that to most people, the fandom itself is all about fursuitting and yiffing each other while wearing diapers.
Now, the fandom might be pretty diverse and have a "tame" side, but... read SeaweedPrincess' post :|

I didn't say that it automatically meant they were that think, it just looks like it to most people that would pass by and see. And some people on here are on here MUCH longer than just a month.
I don't find much shame attached to the title furry. My only problem with people going: IM NOT FURRY, is that, they just shouldn't say it. It's little different from the SRS FURRIES saying murry shit on every other post. It looks like posing when just not saying it all together and requesting kindly that people keep it PG on their page works a little better.
I don't think a fursona is that weird truthfully, I just have one because I'm so horrible at drawing human faces. (Which is why I draw anthro at all. Fu fu fu.) I don't see much issue in fursuiting either. I mean, it's dress up, if done in a harmless manner. I don't like the cartoony look to the fursuits myself. But that's just me. A lot of furries are pretty nice people, even if they draw weird ass fetishes.
I find the tolerance to these fetishes kinda nice, all I have to do is avoid them. (Though some REALLY disturb me and cub should be bannedbannedbanned.) And if you look into a few other fandoms like the yaoi and anime fandom, you'll find a lot of perverse and disturbing things. It's a little harder to get away with it in those fandoms, and furries do tend to get a worse reputation.

But there ARE people on FA who are not furries. One could say that furries "monopolized" cartoony animal people. Most people will agree that Otto Messmer and Walt Disney weren't furries. The furry fandom is -after all- a collective imaginary, therefore if someone doesn't want to be associated with it, they're not furries, no matter how "similar" furries think they are.
Oh, trust me, i'm not weirded out easily. I just called fursuiting and fursonas weird because that's how most people find them. However, i've seen many people creating a fursona because they feel that's what the fandom expects of them. (now that is weird)
A lot of furries are pretty nice people, even if they draw weird ass fetishes.
I know, but sometimes there's too much tolerance and people tend to overlook a furry's mental issues.
I once stumbled upon a guy's profile and well... He was an admitted beastie, claimed to have had sex with his whole family since he was a kid, had an intense love/hate relationship with his mother (he drew himself killing her at least once)
I felt disappointed because 9 out of 10 people were all like "OH MURRRRR" and practically nobody dared to suggest that he needed some help.
I find the tolerance to these fetishes kinda nice, all I have to do is avoid them. (Though some REALLY disturb me and cub should be bannedbannedbanned.)
Once again, it's not the fetishes themselves what disturb me. It's the fandom's attitude towards them.
For example, i like feet more than the average person, and while furry feet (sorry, i mean paws :p ) do nothing to me, i kinda understand paw fetishists... However, i find it creepy how people who obviously get off to paws can draw -say- an lounging otter rubbing its face against a wallaby's gigantic feet and advertise it as "an innocent, non-sexual pic" Sure, a character may be laying there, legs spread and with his groin blatantly pointed at the viewer, but since there are no visible genitalia then it's somehow PG material (you know... for kids)
I have nothing against fetishes, but when people compare their inflation fetish with -say- being a Jew in Nazi Germany and dozens of people applaude him, i can't help but frown and feel ashamed of the community.

I came from DA originally, I've not been on FA near as long as my profile's age. Cartoony animals have never equaled furry to me. XD But I've only been among the online art communities for about two years. I KNOW there are people here that are not furries. Again, I think Beezle meant those that take part in the furry community and parts of the fandom but still claim to not be furries. It's hard to say "WAIT I'M NOT A FURRY" when you have a lot of furry art and furry faves and journals pertaining to furry. (By "furry" I don't mean animals, I mean anthro animals that are clearly not just werewolves or similar mythological beasts not meant to be portrayed as "furs".)
You'll find fucked up people on the net on other sites too, it's much harder to find though. I have seen, outside profiles, that if someone expresses such issues, a whole lot of people jump to them to express their hatred of bestiality and the like.
I do think that furs tend to be too relaxed towards these things. But, as some people have pointed out, anyone under 18 should probably stay clear of this site. (I joined before I was eighteen, but not at 13.) I make it a point to avoid people with such a twisted view on PG material... I still don't think "furry" is a shameful thing though, it is only if you feel that way about it. I mean, I'm a furry I guess, but not a weird ass one. I have my furry fetishes, but I don't share them. (Being perverted should be shared among friends in private in my opinion and I keep my dirty pictures in my scraps.)
I guess in a community where people are allowed to be weird as hell without being judged for it, it lets in the chance for those who cross the line to be accepted. There are defiantly ups and downs to the tolerance, but overall I like being here over DA for that tolerance. A lot of the fetishes on here are basically harmless fantasies, and I hardly think many carry them out.
The really weird fucks worry me, but they don't make me feel ashamed any more than dopey emo wanna-be's make me ashamed for having a chunk-of-bangs-over-eye haircut. Nor for owning long black coats. I have no tolerance to cold.

Well, that's a part of the problem... The term furry means (very) different things to different people. I've seen people being called "furries" because they draw animal characters from time to time (even if 90% of their galleries are non-furry stuff), others believe that you're a furry just because you're on FA or love/loved shows like Looney Tunes or Angry Beavers.

It wasn't like that until recently. Trust me, i saw the guy's pics and read all his journals.

As long as all sorts of fetishes are not only tolerated, but also glorified, i'll keep believing that i don't want to be associated with the fandom in public :|

Agreed.
However, i'm not ashamed of being a furry. I'm ashamed of the furries who lack common sense and have this "us against the world" attitude.
Oh, and yes, i know this is a very diverse community and i've met many great people here

o_O Yes, I always find it odd to be called a furry when you really... Aren't one. I don't completely agree with Beezle, but I see their point.
I don't really like be associated with anything on the net in public. Though I do draw furry artwork (Tameeeeeeeeee) at school and things, and people notice. It doesn't really bother me, and no one has called me a pervert yet. It does start to get weird though when you end up in a discussion about yaoi and m-preg. Net things are hard to translate to the real world.
I haven't come across anyone in real life that has been bothered by my furry work or called me out on it. So I dunno.
I guess I just classify the "us against the world" furries as just idiots... And not as furries. I have a lot of people in the "idiot" category but I have a very low tolerance for stupidity.
Thanks, by the way, for discussing this calmly with me. I've been making an effort to avoid fights and this subject is one of the many people get really mad about.

Actually no, they weren't furries.
A furry is an individual who belongs to the furry fandom, and the furry fandom is just a subculture heavily inspired by old cartoons, werewolf tales, fables, etc.
This is the problem, you know... "Furry" means different things to different people, but in the strict sense it's illogical to claim that there can be furries before the fandom existed.
Being a furry isn't a natural condition. It's more like an ideology. For example, someone can be considered a "closet communist" if he agrees with communism, has communist ideas, etc. even if he doesn't write panphlets, never goes to rallies, and doesn't behave like the typical commie.
However:
If someone from the 17th century said "We're all equal", he's NOT a commie
If someone who believes in private property says "workers are being exploited", he's NOT a commie
If someone without political beliefs say "Capitalism is a failure", he's NOT a commie
If a journalist goes to a communist rally and sings marxist songs, that in itself does NOT make him a commie.
[/end of analogy]

Actually, no, according to the semi-official definition (the one that's been around since the dawn of the internet, and which the staff of most of the cons use)
3. WHAT IS A "FURRY"?
"Furry" when used as a noun seems to refer to one of two things:
a) An animal-like character known as a "furry"
b) A person who is a "furry fan"
The latter is easy enough (knock on wood) to define: A person who
particularly enjoys stories, pictures, dolls, video games or whatever
concerning "furry" creatures. Defining a "furry" creature is somewhat
harder, though. There are several definitions depending upon which "camp"
in furrydom, for lack of a better term, you might be in.
The basic definition for a "furry" is an anthropomorphized animal
character. In other words, an animal character given human-like
attributes, such as sapience and often a humanoid form. ( http://www.faqs.org/faqs/furry/faq/ )
Or, more simply: 'furry' as used within the fandom refers to anthropomorphic animal characters and their fans.
To argue your side, I suppose, one could consider a content creator to note be a 'fan' - that is, they create their own work from scratch, rather than seeking out / collecting / admiring work by others. (and in fact, this is largely the distinction drawn between show artists and fans - except that the performer/audience division is sort of breaking down with the advent of the internet.)

Just because someone writes a faq doesn't mean it's accurate.
As far as i know, the author of that faq deliberatedly made it that way so he could put werewolf roleplayers and normal people who happen to be fans of Bugs Bunny.
You have to understand that "furry" is just a word, so its meaning may change through time. Maybe at some point in the past, during the fandom's origins, people made up that word to define a lot of different groups of people (werewolf roleplayers, dragon lovers and borderline zoophiles come to mind since they have very little in common), but ever since the term became widely known, a subculture was materialized: Conventions took place, social networks were founded, people made fursuits, some murry purry terms were created, memes were born, etc.
Right now the world knows what about the furry fandom (well, at least many people do), so the word "furry" is no longer exclusive property of some obscure usenet groups. The word belongs to society (mostly non-furries) so it means whatever society wants it to mean, and right now it means "someone from the furry fandom".
It's kinda similar to the word "gay". It used to mean "happy", and then it meant something along the lines of "carefree and eccentric", then it meant "promiscuous" and finally in the XXth century society wanted it to mean simply "homosexual"
Trying to label people as "furries" -specially if they DON'T want to be called furries- is futile, since you'd be basically swimming against the flow.

Can you really blame anybody who loves cartoon animals to not want to call themselves a furry, given the extremely negative connotations it has?
'Sides, this site is better run than DeviantArt by miles, and you're free to upload pretty much anything. The catch is having to deal with some of the most horrible and mind-boggling fetishes known to man. Given I'm a Paheal vet, it's kind of a fair trade-off.
I don't know. Maybe I wouldn't mind calling myself a furry if there came a day when the fandom no longer seems to revolves around porn of non-cartoony animal people fucking.
Things aren't always that black and white.
