Katars (punch daggers) are classic weapons from ancient India, a strictly Indian weapon many thousands of years old. They are very effective, so many modern games seem to have incorporated them for the unique look, like the one you mention. Many katars do in fact split into multiple blades via a handle mechanism to cause extreme damage, or parry swords and trap them.
