They're actually not so bad when they're at their normal living depths? It's just that when humans accidentally catch them in nets and haul them to the surface, the change in water pressure makes them... err... decompress. They're still not breathtakingly gorgeous or anything, but they look like fairly reasonable fish instead of just sad pink lumps.
