Ok, here's a brain twister for y'all: A "minotaur" is a half-man, half-bull. A "centaur" is a half-man, half-horse. "Taur" is Greek for "bull." So why is a centaur half horse?
(This is for those who think ....-taur is any creature with quadreped lower half.)

I actually had to write a paper on this in my Greek Mythology while in my undergrad.

Wikipedia suggests that "centaur" could mean "piercing bull-stickers" from ken - tauros or also could mean "bull-slayer", so it seems that the "taur" part seems to indicate some kind of lifestyle for this mythological horsemen, so the whole "taur" aspect seems to become just a name that was associated later with the overall look of a centaur.
