the pencil tool works better if you can fill in the screen with black :P so i figured it'd be best to give my darker half a shot... opinions?

I think this pencil tool compliments your style really nicely! Great perspective on the pose as well; the anatomy on this is really good! Overall I really like this.
One thing I would suggest to turn it into a fully-fledged piece overall is some sort of implied background or vignette, to direct your viewer's attention; As of now the whitespace surrounding the character is very bright and distracting, with nothing to tell my brain "there is nothing here of interest, LOOK AT DWINDLE!".

A big fault of mine is I don't adapt very much of what I do well into each other, adding a background can make the image several times more complicated and take the project that usually takes 6-12 hours well beyond that, and often times the image cannot be recovered as I'm forced to work on 3 layers on a set space of I think 1200 by 900, i fully acknowledge that that is an issue which is why you see some of my older images being posted with grey backgrounds, I'm just not sure if there's an easy work around to it...
Thanks for the compliments and critique //.o gets really awkward because I desire feedback but no one seems to want to say anything...
