Well, since the Dark Souls universe doesn't seem to have much of an afterlife beyond becoming a mindless, walking, mummified corpse or becoming a spooky skeleton, they're probably just wandering around somewhere without knowledge of their former identities or any sense of purpose.

Dark Souls is, as the name implies, rather dark.

They're probably not suffering at least. Just tired and amnesia ridden.

0_0 ... Jeez, that's awful. Still, I guess it's like you said, the DS Universe is- as the name implies- rather dark. Just hope that, in some alternate reality, like this one here, they're a lot happier, even if they're not doing so hot in the core DS 'verse.

I have never beaten the original dark souls due to that big ball of fluff right there.
