Marimo Moss Balls and New Tank Arrangement
I haven’t posted an update on my fishes in a while, so I figured I’d go ahead and do so! Ever since I moved to the apartment with my husband, I’ve been having problems with gross black scummy algae on everything. I’m not sure if this is because I don’t have an algae eater or if I need a better filter (doubtful as I have a 30gal filter and my tank is only 20gal) or if it’s because it’s actoss the room from windows, but my bet is that the water in the apartment is now city water where as my parent’s house and my old house had well water.
Anyway, since the water conditioner to get rid of algae wasn’t working I decided to go a different route and finally get some Marimo Moss Balls. I’ve kept one of these before with little luck (I don’t think it was okay when I got it) so hopefully these guys will do better! I’m excited to have a live plant in my tank tbh. I only have 5 black neon tetras and one big (fully grown, about 3.5-4 inches) striped rafael catfish in there so these new additions are very welcome!

Black beard algae is mainly caused by excessive organic waste in the aquarium. Cutting back on the amount/frequency that you feed the fish, increasing the amount/frequency of water changes (along with a good, thorough gravel vac), and manually removing as much of the algae as possible, will help you get rid of it.
An algae eater probably wouldn't help, since most species will just ignore BBA. A new filter wouldn't help either, since filters don't remove waste, they just keep it out of sight (the main purpose of a filter is just to facilitate nitrifying bacterial colonies, which keep ammonia and nitrite levels down).
Thank you!! I love my tank too! I really want more fish but I have more things to worry about at the moment lol. You don't need an excuse! Just do it! Heck you could even get a little 3-5 gallon tank and get a beta. They're some of the easiest fish to take care of with some excellent personality and a 3-5 gallon tank wouldn't be that expensive~
