While I like my own more sketchy style, I'm trying to get more smooth lines. Mainly by not doubling my mines, like I tend to. Single stroke instead of multiple, to get the line. Haha.

I thought so. Sketchy artists think alike.
The only time I've ever been able to get remotely clean lines is by working up several under-layers and then drawing over them on a final layer--or drawing over the pencil marks after going over the lines with a marker.
And I completely agree, there's something to be lost for taking so much time on just the lines.
