In the original game, wasn't Birdo just a guy who liked to be pretty, but it was changed later? I always thought of Birdo as a female myself, and left all the changes that came later out of it.

Originally it was probably a he and just a crossdresser, but since things are forbidden to expose American audiences to WE changed him to girl... which ironically meant Birdo stopped being a crossdresser and became a transexual, which in our country is more controversial than what we were trying to censor in the first place.
